Motorola Defy (T-Mobile)

Phones
-I'm Nicole Lee, senior associate editor for cnet.com and this is a first look at the Motorola Defy from T-Mobile. It is one of Motorola's few rugged Android phones. The Defy is designed to be water-resistant as well as impact-resistant and shock-resistant. The overall body of the phone is made out of hard-plastic as well as a rubber bumper that surrounds the corners of the phone. Also, covering the ports of the phone are rubber stoppers to prevent water from getting in. The display is made out of a Corning Gorilla glass, which is designed to be impact and scratch resistant. Despite all of this ruggedness, it is quite a slim and lightweight phone. On the front, is a very nice and colorful 3.7-inch display. It has the usual Android 2.1 interface and you get up to seven home screens. The Motorola Defy requires a Motoblur account for you to run the phone. Motoblur consists of several widgets on the home screen. You can configure the widgets to receive your latest messages from your social network as well as your e-mail and text messages. The Motorola Defy comes with the enhanced Motoblur interface that lets you resize the widgets as well as moving them around. In addition to the Motoblur widgets, you can use Android's own widgets as well. At the bottom row of the home screen, you get shortcuts to the phone dialer, the main menu, as well as the contacts list. Underneath that, you get the four touch sensor Android hot keys, to the pop-up menu, the home key, the Back key, as well as the Search function. On the side here, you do get the micro-USB charging port. On the top is the 3.5-millimeter headset jack as well as the screen lock and end/power key. On the other side, you do get the volume rocker. On the back, is the 5-megapixel camera as well as LED flash. As the Defy is a touchscreen only phone, you'll have to use the virtual QWERTY keyboard. You can choose between the Android keyboard or the SWYPE keyboard. The Motorola Defy ships with Android 2.1. It has all the usual Android features like Gmail, Google Talk, Google Search, Google Voice Search, as well as YouTube, and Google Maps. Other features include the web kit browser. You'll also have stereo Bluetooth, GPS with TeleNav support, and Wi-Fi. In fact, the Motorola Defy is one of a few Android phones that supports T-mobile's Wi-Fi calling feature. As the name suggest, this lets make you calls over Wi-Fi. The Motorola Defy also has DLNA support that lets you stream music and video over any other DLNA device. The Motorola Defy is available for $99.99 with the new 2-year service agreement from T-Mobile. I'm Nicole Lee and this has been the first look at the Motorola Defy.
