>> Dong Ngo: Hello this is Dong Ngo for CNET.com and have with me today the BlackArmor 440/420 NAS server from Seagate. This is the first NAS server that Seagate makes under the Seagate brand. The company sells a few others but under other brands such as [inaudible]. The BlackArmor is made primarily for the business environment or user would advance know how about computers and networking. The NAS has a very tiny screen on top here that show the status of the device. It can [inaudible] navigation buttons that are kind of hard to use at first because they are not labeled. The BlackArmor come with 4 bays each can support a external hard drive of any capacity. This mean this server for now can offer up to 8 TB of storage. So you get [inaudible] the BlackArmor in 2 configuration. But first the NAS server come with only 2 hard drive and is called BlackArmor 420. The second all 4 bays are populated and is called BlackArmor 440. You cannot buy the NAS server without hard drives. This hard drive can be installed and removed completely without tools. It can also be replaced one by one when the device is still in operation without losing data. In our testing the server can switch between different rate configuration really fast within less than 2 hours at most. Other NAS server can take up to 24 hours to be on a rate 5 configuration. What is even faster is the servers performance. It is one of the fastest server we've ever tested. This is thanks to the gigabit Ethernet and a very powerful CPU inside. Unlike other NAS the BlackArmor has 2 Ethernet ports. The BlackArmor also come with 4 USB ports; 3 on the back and 1 on the front. You can use these ports to add more storage to the server. It also the first NAS server that allows you to change the cooling fan. This is a nice design touch as over time the fan can get dusty and becomes noisy or stops working entirely. The BlackArmor starts at $750 with 2TB of storage which is a good deal considering other NAS server can cost up to $500 without any storage.
