If you've ever tried to touch up old paint on the wall or match tram.
You know it's difficult to get the shade exactly right.
Even if you know the color, paint can fade overtime and with light exposure.
Luckily, three tiny colors scanners are here to take the paint out of paint matching.
Scanners like the $99 mix mini, the $59 color muse, and $49 pallet pico are small handheld devices designed to scan your wall, connect to an app, and suggest a matching paint color.
Each scanner takes in ambient light and shines it's own light source onto the scanning surface.
The scanners then transmit that information to an app that displays color value, and hex codes, RGB values and matching paint and colors from most major brands I painted drywall with six shades of white, red, and gray from six paint brands to see how accurately the scanners could detect colors and match the known RGB values.
If you're gonna spring for one of these color guessing gadgets, I'd recommend the Nix Mini.
It suggested my actual paint colors as the closest match seven out of 18 times.
c came in second with five exact matches.
Pico's limited brand library meant I could only test six shades, and Pico identified my paint colors as a perfect match four times.
RGP were equally inconsistent.
Still, even the least accurate readings were close enough to produce a nearly indistinguishable match most of the time.
Those results might sound pretty unimpressive, but these scanners do more than just match to one color.
Every scanner suggested multiple matches from different paint brands that followed them one delta What color.
Delta E is a unit of measurement that quantifies how the human eye perceives the differences between two colors.
Anything less than one Delta E is invisible to the untrained eye and skimage also suggests and matches with that range.
This skimage ranges anywhere from 50 to a 100 dollars.
And that's quite a bit more than what you paid for a few paint samples of a hardware store.
However, if you're planning to touch up or color match multiple walls or rooms in your home Color scanners like these take a lot of the guesswork out of finding the perfect hue.
