Motorola Devour

Phones
>> Hi, I'm Ken Sherman, Senior Editor here at CNET.com. Today we're taking a first look at the Motorola Devour. This is a new cool Android phone for Verizon Wireless. It's actually Verizon's third Android phone. It is their first phone with Motoblur, which combines all your social networking, email and everything else into one platform. Early when this first came out, Bonnie Cha said this looked a lot like the Droid's little brother. And that's actually really true. It does have the same basic shape. Of course, it is silver. It is almost exactly the same size. It slides up in a similar manner. But what I really like is the metal casing. It is aluminum. Slider moves up and down with a nice click. Felt the movement was pretty stiff. It snapped into place on either side. The display, a little small, I thought, for the phone's overall size, considering you had all the space over here, especially right here. Thought it could be a little bigger. You will see some touch controls down below. They're not centered, as you can see. And the reason for that is just below, there's what's called a thumbpad. Now, the thumbpad is not only a button that you actually press down, you can hear the click, but it also is a wayyou slap your finger across it and you can move between the home screens. There's five of those, by the way. It is a bit small, so you really need to be accurate about where you put your finger when you rub it over. But I thought it works pretty well, actually. The interface is standard Android. You press that tab, it will take you to the main menu. You can see that there's the call button down here that will take you to the phone dialer. And, of course, there's your contact list. The keyboard just below the display, it's actually pretty nice. The buttons are raised slightly by the surface of the phone. It is pretty spacious, a lot of room on the side here. But in this case, don't like having the spacebar in between that last row of alphabetical keys. And I think in this case, it would be better not to have that dedicated number key and just have the spacebar down below by itself. This is running Android 1.6, which is disappointing considering the Droid had 2.0. It would be nice if we got a little upgrade here. Of course, it will get to 2.0 eventually, but we have no idea when that will be. Biggest problem with Android still, in my opinion, is that there is this fragmentation with the Android OS. That's one downside here. One unique feature on this phone is Motorola phone portal. Now, what that is is it will give you the IP address of this phone. If you type that IP address into a PC browser that's on a WiFi network and it's connected to the phone via WiFi, you can actually transfer media files back and forth. Haven't used it yet, so I don't know how effective it is. But no other Android phone so far I've seen have come with that feature, so that's a nice touch. So I'll be interested in using that. Overall, I think the phone is designed very well. I like the feature set. Seems to run pretty quickly. And so far, the performance is pretty satisfying. I'm Ken Sherman, and this is the Motorola Devour. ^M00:02:41 [ Music ]
