Google Assistant makes your Android texts smarter
[MUSIC]
Hey, everyone, I'm Jessica Dalcourt, here with Hiroshi Lockheimer, who's an SVP at Google, he's a big deal.
And he oversees Chrome, Chrome So, Android, all the good stuff, Google Photos, too.
Now we are here on Android Avenue, this is a really special place at MWC because inside, there are lots of halls with boring foods, out here this is kinda like a little oasis.
And Google does some really fun things here to showcase it's products, and of course, it's a space where people can congregate.
All right, Hiroshi, what are we going to See first?
I'm a little thirsty, I don't know about you.
I'm thirsty.
But we have a juice bar over there with some cool features.
So, why don't we go check that out?
All right, let's go.
Cool.
[MUSIC]
Okay, Hiroshi, so Google built this pretty cool juice bar right in the middle of the NW.
You see.
Tell me, what is this for?
Yeah, so, well, first of all, it's for people who are thirsty, and they want juice, right?
It's very important.
Clearly, obviously.
It's a beautiful day outside and people want juice.
But it's also a way for us to show off a new feature that we launched recently called Live Transcribe.
And it basically lets you talk to your phone, or in this case, the microphone.
And will automatically transcribe what you've said.
And then in this case we're gonna order a drink.
And then that order will then go to the juice barista, who will then make the juice.
And then the juice will come rolling down here.
Okay, great, and so what is this trying to show?
Who is this for specifically?
Yeah, well Live Transcribe's actually a useful feature for people who are hard of hearing or who can't hear at all.
So it's really for an accessibility feature.
It was made by a number of Googlers who wanted to be able to communicate with each other, and we have all the technologies in place to enable that.
And we love that, cuz of course, the mobile phones and the Internet should be for everyone, right?
And so we wanted to make that available, as a new feature.
All right, so let's see how it works.
So I think I've gotta have this green juice.
Juice.
Okay, sounds great, so why don't I go ahead and order the green juice, let me push and hold, green juice.
There it goes, green juice.
I'm gonna push this button to confirm.
No, please?
[LAUGH] Well I could say pleasee too.
[LAUGH]
[LAUGH]
You want me to do that again, I can do it.
No, but do it again in a little bit.
No, that's good, it was good.
So we'll push to confirm And then the order goes over there, thank you for placing your order through Live Transcribe, right?
I didn't actually say that, I was just reading what it said.
[LAUGH], your Live Transcribe?
Yes, exactly, all right, and here's my green juice.
Let me grab me, I'm just gonna grab the whole thing.
Grab this And then cheers.
Lemon, mint, and basil.
Shake it, did you shake yours?
No, hang on.
[MUSIC]
[LAUGH]
That's how I shake things.
[LAUGH]
It's very efficient.
[LAUGH]
Cheers.
Well, cheers.
[MUSIC]
[MUSIC]
All right, so there's this thing on the ground in front of us and it says every partner walk with a little symbol for ARCore and I know that AR is really important to people right now.
And what does ARCore mean here in this context?
Well, AR stands for Augmented Reallity.
And what these badges on the ground do is you can point your phone at it and then bring your phone up and then you'll get a virtual tour guide who will sort of walk you through the booths and all that through our partners.
So this is basically all over the place all around on WEC?
Exactly we have 20 or 30 of these all over the place and you kind of follow it around and you can collect some pins and get some cool rewards and stuff.
Stuff like that.
So we're kind of making it fun, as well.
So what are you trying to demonstrate by having this here?
Well, we're demonstrating what's possible with augmented reality.
Using your camera and having that information overlayed with additional information.
In this case, how to walk to our partner booths.
That's what we're demonstrating.
Demonstrating here.
[MUSIC]
Well, Hiroshi had to bail because important Google stuff, but I found this adorable little coffee shop that's going to be demonstrating some new Google Assistant features.
I'm here with Alvaro.
Tell me what we're seeing.
Yeah, we're showing messages from Android, so what's so special about it
Is that it has something compared with the Google system in it.
So it helps you in your daily life, giving you suggestions, when you are talking to your friends.
So for example I imagine that you want to go to the cinema tonight.
So you touch and you speak to your friend and you tell them let's watch a movie tonight.
The good thing is that when the app recognizes that you are talking to your friend, you want to go for a movie.
So it suddenly [UNKNOWN] pops up and tells with the Google assistant Information about the films, so that's very useful because you don't need to go to google and search for it and then share it with your friend.
It makes a suggestion.
Yeah, it makes a suggestion, then if you press it, you get all the information.
For example, let's see.
[UNKNOWN], Okay?
So let's see what's the film about, okay?
We liek it, we can see the trailer you want but [UNKNOWN] looks good.
So I just send it to my friend and he already has it.
Like just endless NDR.
It's there, we don't need to do anything else.
So also please write maybe we can go for dinner before so you can ask me, let's enter before.
You can just tell me
[BLANK_AUDIO]
Okay, did you see it?
Okay, so I typed let's get dinner before the movie.
And you get the recommendations about restaurants nearby.
[CROSSTALK] Restaurants nearby.
Yeah, let's see.
What are we up to?
Okay, Vienna, a very good restaurant, what do you think?
Yeah
You're good for it?
Yeah, let's do it?
Okay, so yeah, you get the directions, you get the number, you get the schedule, you get everything and you can share it just with a tap.
Yeah would you, if you press send to coffee shop That is the name of this phone.
I'll just get it in [UNKNOWN].
So by the time you get your coffee prepared, you have already set up the plans with your friends.
And even imagine that it's been raining lately, so you don't know if you are going to be to do the plan, so you just ask, what's the weather tonight?
[MUSIC]
So.
Right in the Messages app.
Yeah yeah you can also do it with voice.
So right, the weather is gonna be lovely.
So I'll send it to you, and I'll tell you it's going to be perfect.
And so we have our plans now.
Nice.
[MUSIC]
I really like what Google does with this space every year, and I'm really loving Android Avenue.
Because inside those halls, it's hectic, it's information overload, and giant booths.
It's really nice to step outside in a more relaxed environment and see something new for MWC that's kind of fun.
Thank you for coming on this tour with me and for everything MWC keep it locked on CNET
