That's where I like upconverting DVD players. These decks take the 480 lines of picture that you find on a standard DVD, and synthesize it to look like 720 or 1080 lines, which is HD. Now, it's not true HD because those extra lines just weren't there in the first place, so the deck is having to guess what would have been there, and make it up as it goes. But it works amazingly well, and your old DVDs will look dramatically better on your hi-def set. For true HD disc playback, of course, you need a Blu-ray deck and Blu-ray discs. But if you go that route, there's a nice bonus. Most Blu-ray decks are also upconverting decks, as is the PlayStation 3 with current firmware. So in both cases, they'll make your old discs look better. And you may find that upconverting is all the definition you need.
