Android Beam for Ice Cream Sandwich
Speaker 1: Hey, everybody.
I'm Jessica Dolcourt from CNET joined here by my buddy Blake Simic from MT Mobile and we have Samsung Galaxy Nexus Phone.
Today, I'm gonna show you the Android Beam feature that's part of Ice Cream Sandwich.
Now the first thing that you need to do to use it is make sure that NFC is on because this is an NFC-enabled feature.
So you go into your Wi-Fi setting, you hit More, you make sure that NFC is enabled here with this check mark, click Android Beam and make sure that it's slid into the on position.
Now, it will be on by default.
So you can use this of course with 2 Galaxy Nexus phones.
You can also Beam with a phone that's Gingerbread supported like the Nexus S, although there is a slight limitation to that.
So today, we're just gonna show it to you on 2 Galaxy Nexus phones.
So Beaming something is actually quite simple.
You can Beam a YouTube video.
You can Beam a website.
You can Beam a map.
You can Beam contact information, really the list is pretty beefy.
So to do it, you just open up what you wanna Beam, so I will start with a YouTube video.
You press the back of the phones together, it gets a little jolt, makes little noise, click Touch to Beam to confirm and what do you have there?
Speaker 2: That looks like a YouTube video.
Speaker 1: Okay.
Speaker 2: Instant.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
It's really fast.
To prove how easy it is, I'm gonna do it again.
This time, with a website.
I got cnet.com here.
And now we have cnet.com on 2 phones.
Speaker 2: Wow.
Speaker 1: And let's do it with a map.
Speaker 2: Let's go back down.
Speaker 1: Here, San Francisco back to back.
Let's choose sideways this time.
Speaker 2: Sure.
We got maps.
Speaker 1: Instant.
And let's do one more.
I'm going to load up an app to show you how it works just with Living Social for example.
Touch the Beam.
Speaker 2: And the market link is right there.
Speaker 1: So then we were wondering what would happen if you try to Beam 2 items at the same time.
So I've got a website open.
Speaker 2: And I've got the map.
Speaker 1: All right.
One, two, three.
You got Beam to me.
Speaker 2: You got Beam to me.
Speaker 1: Oh my god.
It works.
Speaker 2: Oh, it works.
Speaker 1: Because now I have the map.
Speaker 2: And I have the website.
Awesome.
Speaker 1: Look at that.
So there you go.
That's Android Beam for Ice Cream Sandwich.
