Acer's Aspire E 15 an unusual mix of old, new, performance and value
[MUSIC]
The $600 Acer Aspire E15 is a rare everyday laptop that delivers more than it's price suggests.
There's no flashy design, but it looks good.
And while it's not amazingly thin or light at about an inch thick and around five pounds it's fine for the occasional commute.
You won't find a four k touch screen with super thin bezels but you do get a decent 15.6 inch full HD mac display.
It doesn't get very bright but off angle view is surprisingly good.
The keyboard and Windows precision touchpad are better than expected too and while I 'd sacrifice the number pad for slightly bigger keys, it's overall comfortable and it's even back lit.
Around the sides you'll find the ports of laptops past with a full size ethernet, HDMI, and VGA outputs.
Type A USB ports, and an SD card slot, and of all things, a DVD burner.
Given the price and features so far, you might be expecting junk inside, but that's not what you get at all.
Instead you'll find a pretty speedy eighth gen Intel Core i5 processor and Nvidia MX150 discrete graphics To help with photo and video editing and gaming if you dial back the settings.
There's eight gigs of memory and a 256 gig SSD, but you can actually easily pop this open and add more of both on your own.
But even with what its got it performed really well and managed nearly 12 hours of battery life on our streaming video test.
It's hard to say how the system will hold up over time.
But out of the box, this E15 is an easy recommendation for a home office, or for a student who doesn't need ultra portability.
