Now normally, the next generation of a vehicle is an evolution of the previous concept, a tweak here and an improvement there, but the 2021 Toyota Mirai here is a completely different vehicle.
It flips the previous concept completely on its head For starters, it is lower longer and wider stepping up to a much wider more premium vehicle than the compact eco quirky vehicle that came before it.
The move to rear wheel drive comes with the promise of improved driving dynamics and a much more premium on road presence.
Now about the only part of the Maria that hasn't completely changed from before is the fact that it's still a fuel cell EV, meaning that it takes hydrogen fuel and converts that into electricity, which in turn drives the wheels.
However, the new field cell stack promises to be more powerful, more efficient, and deliver 30% more range than the previous generation, which according to my reckoning, puts it at around 400 miles between hydrogen Philips.
And, of course, on the inside is a much more premium cabin to better match the more premium exterior and a full load out of the latest generation of the Toyota technology.
Now, for a couple of production tweaks, the next generation of Toyota Mirai should hit the road in 2020 in global hydrogen market.
In the United States that basically means California.
But, hydrogen is a much bigger deal here in Toyota at home in Japan, and globally for the brand.
I, for one, cannot wait to get behind the wheel.
