It's unclear whether the device's slick design and simple user interface have proved useful for functions other than accessing the Internet.

Actually it can detect an iPod touch

Just got on the internet with my iPod touch to a website that
displays your browser version. It did detect that my device is an
iPod touch.

I don't know if Google is combining both devices together, but at
least it is possible to differentiate.
iPod Touch is amazing

Who needs the phone bit... And who needs the incredibly THICK
and HEAVY MacBook Air? The iPod Touch is the thinnest,
lightest Macintosh Apple sells.

It's the ultimate device for people on the road a lot. You've got
your movies, video, internet, and soon third party applications.
With the video out cable you can hook it up to your hotel's TV,
and with the dock you have a remote control for it.

As for the browser, it's reasonably fast and convenient. Its lack
of caching leaves something to be desired, but it's surprisingly
functional.
It sure couldn't be the "phone"...
by gefitz January 19, 2008 10:04 PM PST
It MUST be the browsing: have you ever gotten a call from someone using one of these things? Sounds like a cyborg, for cripes sakes.

That, and all the times I've been accidentally hung up on when someone's face touches their phone in that special but not-so-unusual way.

Next time, let's have the Marketing Department at Apple simply drop the "phone" completely and call it just the "i".

Gefitz - Have you ever used an iPhone yourself? The touch screen
goes dormant when you are holding the phone by your face.

iPhone

While I haven't used my iPhone to buy any music, I have used it in a
number of other eCommerce transactions. I've made dinner
reservations, changed my airline reservations, checked in for my
flight, and paid bills with it. When I bought it, I thought it was a
cool mobile phone with internet capabilities. I was wrong, it's really
a mobile computer/communications device, which includes a
phone. The difference is subtle but significant.

It's another apple lemon
by ggrs34 January 21, 2008 1:30 AM PST
Less than 1% of the phone market !!! and you spin it, ooo wait, you can get online at slower than dial-up ! How exciting for apple heads.

It's a failure! People just use it to get online because they've spent all that money and are trying to salvage what's left of their pride!

Even Apple heads know it's a lemon all hype no substance. Jobs you blew it again.

Its not a lemon.

Its only been on the market for one year, don't worry.
Apple will continue to make headway in the cellphone market
and eventually capture a huge percentage. Its not a guarantee,
but judging what Apple did with the MP3 player market. I think
its a given. Don't forget they sold 4 million iPhones in just 200
days, for a cell phone startup thats incredibly phenomenal. As
people eventually get tired of their old phones from Motorola &
Blackberry and see what Apple has to offer, lets just say Apple
will make an offer people can't refuse.

I will probably buy the next generation iPhone as my Blackberry
will probably become an antique next to it. For that matter I'm
also going to switch from XP to Leopard. That Macbook slim is
just incredible!
Are you kidding me?!

You're not actually serious are you? I mean come on. Whether or not you like the iPhone, no one in their right mind would say it's a failure!!! Granted it doesn't include some basics (the lack of Bluetooth music streaming is my biggest complaint), but that hasn't stop millions (4 apparently) from buying it. To call it a lemon is just egregious. If Apple does get 1% of the market with its iPhone that would be incredible considering there are 1000s upon 1000s of other options. Most if not all other manufacturers have several different current models on the market (not to mention discontinued models). Getting 2% of the smartphone market is a big deal and 1% of the entire market is huge. My point is you can hate the iPhone all you want and you have valid reasons as said above, but to say it is a failure and a lemon is just nonsensical.
