Looks like IBM has a custom chip for all three consoles (Cell for sony, PowerPC for the Xbox, and a custom one for Nintendo's Revolution).

Indeed. Don't forget that they also made the GameCubes CPU as well. It is going to be an interesting decade!

One would think that Intel and AMD would have tried to get one of these projects. And why isn't Apple making a game console?

do you know what's going on in the semiconductor processor world? i'm sure you must have heard of amd and intel both now chasing dual core processors. intel has around 15 new processors in the pipelines right now. i don't think they have the resources and time to develop custom gaming chips. not only that, but they'd have to divert part of their fabbing capacity away from their core business, which is usually behind demand already, especially during new product launches. amd certainly doesn't have the time and resources. they're struggling to stay ahead of the game. even though they have been putting out new features ahead of intel, they are still losing to them in sales. i'm not an industry insider, but that is my understanding from following the industry.

of course, the first xbox did use off-the-shelf pentiums. but that was 4-5 years ago. as these machines become more complex and competitive, they can't be using generic parts and expect to win the hearts of enthusiasts, or at least not look outdated next to a competing console with new, specialized hardware.

now as for apple... you must have also heard that the console business is high risk and involves deep pockets for a company to be a serious long-term contendor in this market. MS lost hundreds of millions and is still losing money on the first generation xboxes. do you think apple can afford to do the same? at least MS has experience publishing game titles and has clout when it comes to having game developers produce for xbox. can apple get developers to produce games for them? not just a few titles, but hundreds? with apple's premium pricing strategy, how much do you think an apple gaming console would cost? ~700? more? who would pay?

Not trying to be a dick or anything, but I read that the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Revolution will all be coming out mid-2006. And if you're that worried about the 'Revolution' you should also know that PS3's tech. is about 15x better than that of Nintendo's revolution and 5x better then xboxs.

"I read that the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Revolution will all be coming out mid-2006."

look at the timestamp on the article you read. try reading articles released this year.

"PS3's tech. is about 15x better than that of Nintendo's revolution and 5x better then xboxs."

well duh. since, you know, "technology" and performance as a lump are so easily measured and compared such that it can be boiled down to being "15x...and 5x better" than something else running different drivers and software. riiiight. i bet this kid's still using aol on a 56k modem.

by the way, nintendo has not released any technical specs about their new console (try reading the other articles on news.com). so..."15x better" you say... hahaha. where did you get that number? from a post by a 12yr old boy on a fansite forum? nice.
