Microsoft... Was mentioned in the article?
I mean no bashing to CNet... this WHOLE story had TWO paragraphs that related to Microsoft.

"The world's largest software company is now working to adapt a basic version of Windows XP so it is compatible with the nonprofit One Laptop Per Child Foundation's small green- and-white XO laptop.

"We're spending a non-trivial amount of money on it," Microsoft Corporate Vice President Will Poole said in an interview on Thursday. "We're working hard. But we're still at least a few months away." "

Now... what the heck? I mean... its 13 paragraphs! Could no one find more than "its coming"?

How about...
"With the entry of Microsoft efforts into the OLPC Project, bloggers are now projecting the demise of the effort, which they have solely blamed on Windows demanding it be asked permission to charge the battery from the impoverished user before the user can even open the device."

Uh, yeah
And those two paragraphs were the most significant part of the
whole article, too.
It's called "reading comprehension skills".

Geoworks on XO Laptops
Has anyone gotten GEOS to run on the XO laptop? It's a natural on htis machine IMHO considering GEOS' low memory footprint and ultra low power requirements (as on the old Nokia 9110 phone and Brother Geobook Laptop).

Why? So they can drop support on XP?
Microsoft has already made it know in many ways that XP's life is coming to an end for the regular consumer. They have put off the sorely needed service pack 3 for XP yet they are pouring substantial amounts of resources into making a version for the OLPC? Am I the only one to see the hypocrisy in this?

They are pushing Vista and trying everything they can to get XP users to upgrade and kill off the product line but the are pouring massive amounts of resources into making it available for the OLPC.

This in itself is a reason to stay the course with Linux.

I am a Windows user but this is just plain stupid. If the OLPC people buy into this then they should just stop the OLPC initiative altogether.

Can't agree more...
You're right.

Microsuck definitely pushed that ridiculous Vista "upgrade" on the developed world because we're so willing to spend our money and hey - we don't know any better, anyway.

world governments 2002: Microsoft must make stripped down versions of their XP OS.
micro$oft: we can't

one laptop per child foundation 2007: We're gonna use Linux
micro$oft: wait, here's a stripped down version of our XP OS

We Are Microsoft prepare to be assimilated!
Never let it be said that M$ would miss an opportunity to enslave
the next generation of users to M$. Vista is already their own
demise. How many countries want all of their computers talking to
Mother M$ all day and every day? Also hear that M$ is offering
china 3 dollars per copy for XP. Anything to make a buck. Charging
us hundreds and others 3 dollars. Hmmmmm.....
