Microsoft extends Xbox 360 warranty to 1 year

Just in time for last-minute holiday shoppers, Microsoft has extended the Xbox 360's warranty from 90 days to one year, bringing it in line with the warranty lengths of rival game consoles from Sony and Nintendo.

The extension is retroactive, meaning that someone who bought an Xbox 360 in the United States or Canada and paid for repairs within the last year is eligible for reimbursement. In many other countries, a one-year warranty already is standard.

"Customer satisfaction is a central focus and priority for the Xbox 360 system," Jeff Bell, a marketing vice president at Microsoft, said in a statement Friday.

Microsoft also said reimbursement checks for repairs done in the last 12 months will be sent out automatically in about 10 weeks. Contact information for warranty questions is available on the Xbox support site.

Microsoft has been the target of an online petition--with 3,382 signatures as of Friday--calling for a retroactive warranty extension to one year. The petition claims that Xbox 360 systems frequently failed after the original 90-day warranty and that customers were unreasonably required to pay between $50 and $129 for repairs.

Nintendo's Wii comes with a standard one-year warranty, with a free 90-day extension if customers register their consoles on the company's Web site. Sony's PlayStation 3 comes with a one-year warranty.

Some credit cards, including American Express and Visa, extend the manufacturer's warranty if a product is bought using that card.

90 days? One year? You gotta be kidding...
In the European community EVERY product (from consumer electronics to cars) MUST carry, at least, a full TWO years warranty.
No one would ever buy a product with a one year warranty, let alone 90 days.

must be nice
must be nice to live in a nanny state where you are protected at
every turn. do you expect them to make sure you do not eat too
many fatty foods, or drink to much soda too. where you pay more
with out the choice to spend less and take a bigger risk. that said I
like longer warranties too, but it should be up to the corporation
not a government. If the market will bear it, and consumers buy
products that have a said feature over one that does not, the
market will correct itself.

Europe sucks
2 years, whatever. let the consumer decide what waranties they want when they purchase things, instead of the government forcing compaines. Europians don't work anyway, thus my lack of caring about them.

That is why
when my friends from Europe visit they want to go shopping....to save money and pay WAY less taxes.

I will take less of a warrenty to pay less taxes.

You are almost correct about guarantees
It's possible that second hand cars can be offered with shorter
warranties, eg six months. Certainly in the United Kingdom, a
one year guarantee is the norm for consumer products with
working parts, but not for stuff such as socks and cheese. And
the "European community" no longer exists, except in out of
date public sector documents. It is called the European Union;
the name was changed some years ago, possibly in homage to
the immortal Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Where you see
the abbreviation "EC" it refers to the European Commission, a
sort of unelected politbureau.

This is because....
Microsoft is a cheap company, that's why they do stuff like this all the time.

Just look who the company is run by and their track record of being nice or fair and you should deduce your own answer.

I own the original Xbox, and I never had any problems with it, other then the ocasional freeze. I own the Xbox 360, and it crashed once and that was it.

So far so good, I had my xbox for about like 9 months or so, I think.

I am still going to end up buying the Wii for the wife, and the PS3 for my self, gotta have all the toys, life is short.

1 year is good...
...but now Microsoft should to include the HD DVD drive installed in the 360 unit at no additional cost. That would make a big difference in what system one would choose.

We need to have higher standards
If people could just get over the mania of owning the newest thing out right away, we could force manufacturers to carry better warranties. No one stands behind their product any more unless you pay them extra to do so. Very sad. 1 year is OK, but you know it'll break right after that.

planned obsolescence
> 1 year is OK, but you know it'll break right after that.

Of course. It's called "planned obsolescence". Companies can't keep selling quality products after the market is saturated, so a lot of things started having expiration dates engineered into them in order to get those current owners to pay up again in the future. The razor companies don't want to invent a one-use permanent shaver, because they'd quickly run out of people to sell to and have no business left. Laser printer cartridge makers started making more delicate drums that would wear out sooner in order to ruin the refill market and hijack those customers back as new cartridge customers. Inkjet printer makers putting chips in the ink cartridges that detect low ink levels and refuse to work again if it's refilled, by remembering that it WAS empty, forcing you to buy a whole new cartridge instead of just the ink. I'm afraid of how much this mentality might be in pharmacutical companies. Why cure patients and then lose them as customers when you can hold their lives hostage and get them to pay up for expensive treatments for the rest of their lives?

Perhaps MS's engineers were just a little too aggressive in engineering a short lifespan for the product...

Europe
Depending on where in Europe, things are different. When I lived there 20 years ago, I liked it much better then the system we have here.

But I guess there are best things that one can find in any system, pros and cons to everything.

I also like some things that you can do here, and some that you can't. Like getting locked up for marijuana, this is almost laughable in Europe.

Locking up people for plants and building more jails at an alarming pace just to keep up with inmates. I personally am waiting for all the old farts to die from old age, so that our Congress is repopulated with the next generation of progress.

Old generation of greed and blindness, has to die off, and since it's illegal to hang people, we have to wait I guess :- )

Huh?
In most European countries, you can get locked up "for marijuana", and it's not really laughable. I guess things have changed in 20 years.

Right....
All I know is that.....

There are 4000 chemicals in tobacco with 100 identified poisons and 63 known drugs which cause cancer. The most talked about drug in tobacco is nicotine. Nicotine is vasoconstrictor and a nerve toxin, it has been classified as a class I insecticide. Other poisons include: Arsenic, Cyanide, Formaldehyde (used to embalm bodies), Ammonia Bromide (a toilet cleaner )- Ref. 1. Each year, because of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, an estimated 3,000 nonsmoking Americans die of lung cancer, and 300,000 children suffer from lower respiratory tract infections.

0 People a year die from smoking MJ, and hemp is hella better and more durable then cotton.

Idiot!
Yeah, I'm on board with the fact that smoke in your lungs is just
natural. But I think you're proof positive that it does have an effect
on your brain!

whatever...
Yes, I am an idiot and you are not.

Phewww, can you say that in 12 languages, which I know how to speak ? lol

Residing to call anyone an idiot, shows off your wisdom. MJ can be eaten and vaporized, no need to smoke anything.

You are one of those people that believes all the BS your government feeds you on a daily basis.

I'm this I'm that
You're not seeing the logic of the argument here. 12 languages
but you want to relate smoking tobacco to eating/vaporizing MJ.
Do you realize that the 'sin' is something that is largely paying
our own personal taxes. I'm thinking you remember the day
when a pack of cigs was less than a buck. Just think, if the
federal government outlawed them.....on the same day both
federal and state government would have to figure out how to
replace all that lost income. Where would they go? To our
pockets? The cigarette problem is a much bigger thing than a
simple ban just like the MJ debate.
Oh yeah...wisdom says that idiot was actually an word used by
the greeks which symbolized an individual who is disinterested
in politics.

bla bla, that's all I am hearing here....
All the best cars come from Europe and Japan (Asia), Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler suck big time.

If those people don't know how to work, design, and all that, then ya, I guess you don't have to worry about them.

IT IS your US (and well, mine now) Government that was pushing for globalization of the Economy and now you guys can't handle it.

So becareful what you wish for. When I attended standard highschool in Europe, Algebra I was thought in the 5th grade and II in the 6th, by the time you finished 8th grade, you have all the Calcilus and pretty much all the tough math done.

After high school, there is only Univercities, no such thing as a local community college.

You only have this in the US, because your educational system sucks and you have to import most of your talent, just look at Microsoft and how many people there who work there are from India and now they are taping China.

Most US companies already have exported your jobs, because you can't compete internally.

And of course there are exceptions to this, plenty of smart people here too, if they choose to go and get an education and acctually study and pay attention in the class room, so you don't forget what you learned 3 months later, for merly getting the grade.

Fact os life, are sometimes hard to swallow.

Also, you better Care About EUROPE, because they will be the ones saving yous ASS!, once Iran gets the NUKES and uses them on ISRAEL and maybe dirty bomb something else.

You will need their support to return the favor from WWII. Europe is the only ally you have, so don't make an enemy from the only friend you got.

You know what....
You want to talk crap about the US? Who does every other
freakin country come to when they have trouble? Bite me you
idiot. Are we perfect? No. But we do the best taht we can. And
the best that we can is a hell of a lot better than what most
countries do and that's why everyone turns to us when they need
help. This is a tech forum so this converstation has no business
here, but the fact that you brought it here and said these things
pisses me off. If we're all idiots why are we the most powerful
country in the world? That's not cocky, just the truth. Yeah we
have plenty of faults but so does every other county so don't
come talking trash about us. Where the hell do you live and
what the hell has the USA had to do for you lately? If we don't
get involved in the international arena we are blasted for
ignoring the rest of the world. If we do get involved everyone
says we are invading. You will always hate us but that's your
problem. Get a life.

"bla bla" is what you're spewing for sure
First, if we're so terrible, why did you come here to live (if it's your US now)? Second, let's learn how to spell shall we? Third, how exactly will Europe be saving us if Iran nukes Israel (a proposition that I find highly credible)? If you look closely at a globe, we're a little farther away from Iran than Israel or Europe is. Fourth, there's a very good reason why most professions in the US don't recognize degrees from European "Universities". They're just slightly more advanced than Technical Colleges. Calling it a University doesn't make it so. And finally, if we're counting on Europe to be an ally, we're already done. With friends like the French (and most of the other countries except England), who needs enemies? The US will be just fine by ourselves thank you.

The US has a lot of problems, and there's a lot we need to fix. We're still the strongest, most free and best place to live in the world. That's why we've got a problem with too many people trying to get in, not trying to get out.

Merry Christmas
Can all of you call a truce...this wasn't supposed to turn into a Europe vs. USA thing here. It's just a story about Microsoft extending it's warranty, whatever their self-serving reasons are, it's still a good thing. I'll finish with a Merry Christmas, while it's still legal to say that!

What?
Okay, this conversation has gone from the actual topic to how europians benefit from 2year warranty to how the US is better because of less taxes because of that to obesity problems compared from the US and Europe to finally why the US is better than Europe/Why Europe is better than the US.

The US is a powerful country, and an ally of Europe as a general. I'm from the UK and im fine with the way our country is run, sure there is problems but every country has problems. The educational system is fine in both countries.

Europe benefits from this whole 2year warranty thing, possibly better laws based on eating habits, etc. trying to keep our community healthy (among other things), clearly its not going to completely work. The US benefits from lower taxes and freedom to do as they wish (among other things), countries all have their faults, British people can be considered ignorant and posh. Americans can be considered as obese and stupid. They're just pathetic stereotypes. Were all trying to better ourselves and keep to our standards. America is meant to be a country of freedom, stopping them from eating what they want to is taking away their freedom further, they may not see it as a problem as long as theyre happy.

Sorted?
Okay, back on topic please.
