As first reported by CNET News.com, the site is the first incarnation of Go.com's shift away from competing against America Online and Yahoo as an all-purpose site. Instead, the company plans to retrace its steps and relaunch Go.com this summer as an entertainment and leisure destination.
With the launch of Movies.com, the Web network hopes to attract mainstream moviegoers with information and services traditionally geared toward film fanatics, according to Erik Flannigan, vice president of entertainment at Go.com.
"The average moviegoer...(will) find information on those films...in the way that hard-core junkies can find it," Flannigan said.
The site will provide insider information about upcoming movies and classics. It will feature movie trailers that people can download, as well as reviews, box office figures, show times and a customizable calendar to preview what's due for release.
The site also will offer services such as SnipIts, which lets people send show times to friends via email. The service will eventually be available on handheld devices.
Flannigan said the upcoming relaunch of Go.com will offer services from Movies.com throughout the entertainment destination.
