Flash on demand from Akamai, Macromedia

Akamai Technologies and Macromedia on Tuesday announced a media-streaming technique designed to let users more quickly view online graphic and video content.

The new offering--which combines Akamai Streaming with Macromedia Flash technology--will essentially give customers on-demand Flash streaming-media services, the companies said.

Consequently, the companies said, Web sites hosted on Akamai's EdgePlatform distributed computer network will be able to offer audio-visual content such as TV shows and movies without disruptions in streaming. And consumers won't need to download Flash players, they said.

"Akamai Streaming combined with Macromedia Flash fundamentally changes the way video is deployed and used on the Internet today," Chris Hock, director of product management at Macromedia, said in a statement.

The companies said the major beneficiaries of the offering will be media companies, news agencies and ad-serving companies.

In other news, Macromedia recently signed a deal with Nokia to develop new Flash technologies for the phone maker's Series 60 handsets.
