With that much hardware require, you're gonnna have to wait 2 to 3 years later for the price of new existing hardware to fall in price.
2 to 3 years, 1GB RAM , 256mb GeForce, 120 GB will be the minimum or intro PC.
To build one for myself:
AMD Athlon XP Duo Core Dual SLi 256MB GeForce PCI Express video cards 4 GB RAM 2 x 500 GB SATA drives
If you're looking at existing market price... for this system I'm looking at about $1500 ~ $2000 for just the core. Does not include keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor, or printer.
2 to 3 years later, this core will go down to $800 ~ $1000 if they're still around of course.
On the other hand, 2 to 3 years later, Quad GPUs will be affordable by then! THEN I'll get Vista running on it.
Wait until you see the hardware requirements to play HD video with Vista! You will need a HD DVD drive, new mother board, new video card and new monitor and not one of those can be purchased today (except perhaps the monitor). If you just purchase Vista and a HD DVD drive, your movies will be fuzzed down to a much lower resolution when played. They cannot be played at all if you don't install Vista. Those of us with existing laptops are probably out of luck even if we use Microsoft's Managed Copy feature to transfer the HD movie.
Hey, I got a great business plan! Let's redesign our OS. Drive our micro-serfs crazy with absurd requests and last minute changes. Make the OS so bloated that the user will need to purchase all new machines. And even those won't be able to handle the load! Leave the pirates behind with a phone-home OS that if you so much as think of copying it to another machine, everything gets disabled and you get a horrible error. Change the BSD to another color like, Pink. PSD! Mimic Apple's jelly-look button GUI. And kill numerous third party companies that make useful programs that we'll just copy and embed. No need for backups now that we make drive images on the fly! I expect to try Vista in 24 months after its release. I didn't say buy.
If I upgrade to Vista requirements, and I'm buying an upgrade version of Vista, will it install? That is, how many folks out there will "hit the wall" on hardware upgrades for their WinXP version, at which point it will say, "oops, sorry, this system has been modified too much from the original configuration. I refuse to run."?
Okay, probably a phone call or two . . perhaps an hour or two on the phone listening to threats of having to pay for technical support will fix the problems. But, surely there is a better way!
I don't use Windows DRM Media, so may not know about this.
Isn't your media, all the hundreds of pounds you've spent on music, locked to your machine? So if you change operating system - do you have to reinvest in all that music?
Would I be asking for too much if I wanted the OS I have now to work right and fast. I may be in the minorty but I would be willing to depart from the current hardware and start over (Mac approach) to get something that works well. Or are they setting the bar so high with this release that everyone is gonna have get updated hardware to run Vista? Either way, Intel, Dell and HP must be loving this.
Mac doesn't include monitor. By the time I upgrade MacMini, it will cost lot more than a windows pc.
Mac OSx is upgraded every year and Apple expects users to pay for the upgrade (ofcourse if you want).
MacOnomics
1) OSX total upgrades so far 4+ upgrades in last 5 yrs. Each upgrade say costs $69 (Student pricing), then total cost = $69 * 4 + Orginal cost or $120+ (retail price) * 4 + Orginal Cose
2) WindowsXp home $99 upgrade or $200 full edition (HOME) and then no upgrades for last 5 yrs!!!.
How is Mac economical!!! You may say that oh you need to spend ton of money on AntiVirus, AntiSpyware etc..guess what there are may freeware software.
No one is twisting your arm to upgrade every Mac OS version, but it's nice to have the option (if you are someone who likes new software). Most people didn't move to OS X from OS9 until at least Jaguar (10.2) or Panther (10.3).
You can skip versions if you like and at that point, if you upgrade as often as is _possible_ with windows, you will see far greater improvements for about the same price.
a pc and mactel will cost about the same. Just look at the price of a pci/e gaphics card, $300 +, and if the printer mfg doesn't want to write a new driver for your printer, not unlikely since they'll make more money selling Vista compatable printers, you could add another $100+. Let's not forget a Vista compatable lcd display $300+. We're not far from the cost of a Mac, and oh, did I mention the $300 or $400 for Vista pro.
It's going to take a lot more than eye candy to get a lot of XP users to buy into Vista.
Vista will be a fad upgrade. The eye candy is just candy. Style over substance will not win in the PC world. Mass adoption of vista will take a year at least. Pirates will get around WGA and get Aero glass to work weeks after release.
I'm a windows user, but seeing this, Apple would be wise to start pushing OS X on all Intel/AMD-based machines. They'd also be wise to get games working well on OS X asap.
The Linux community should take the opportunity to push a very user-friendly version out to the public... SuSe/KDE for idiots and windows users... something like that.
This time you won't get flashy graphics and sparkle. Last time they stopped you getting security fixes, and opened a world of botnets.
to keep the net Safe even prated copies net security, maybe even more than others.
Killing features is a better plan, esp with all the machines that have issues, get repired and windows wont activate as its no longer in the same machine.
The Local MS tech support reps got to know me on a first name basis when XP launched with its first activation. Now they have given me software and tricks to fix it, and as well we moved to volume licensing. Which helped. We still don't want the upgade service, but It looks like they ae merging volume liscences and the upgrade subscriptions into the same package. so by the time we are forced to use Vista it we may have less options.
Still lets hope pirated copies gan get service patches so we get less zombie nets. Even lousy MS security is better than none
Given time , money and effort, nothing is secure, it is a simple as that!
If it can accessed, it can be hacked, backdoors and other tricks and hacks will exist!
All M$ is doing is trying to lay down the basic ground rules for the next generation integrated TPM/CPU control module on their terms in order to continue to generate profits!
The reality is, that it is only ever about money first(profits above all else, functional product service last), then total and absolute dictatorial control later!
Well, it looks like the choices for the future in the use of home computers will be fatal indeed for all end users!
It does seem puzzling that even though we can have advanced desktop graphical interfaces now with the likes of DesktopX, Object Desktop and Windowblinds (that work fine with win2k and XP and are far better than Vista appears to offer) that MS cannot make something that would be lighter on resources.
It would be crazy if MS shot themselves in the foot with Aero so seriously that people turn to DesktopX etc for Vista as well.....I dont know if DX, OD or WB has been developed for Vista but I expect it will be and it would be interesting to see whether they would be more resourcefull!
I was considering replacing my PC with a mac but found them to be way overpriced compared to an equivalent PC that I could buy or build myself.
Also I would have had to reinvest in all my applications and some of the software probably doesnt exist for the mac such as djing software I use. I also wouldnt have been able to play any of the games I've bought already or wanted to buy in the future.
In my opinion switching to a mac sounds like a nice idea but for most people it simply isnt worth it or feasable.
A new Mac will allow you to use existing apps that have nothing comparable on Mac. Mac prices are comparable, if not less, if similarly configured. Like everything else, it pays to buy quality. Go to Apple online and configure your next computer and save alot of headaches.
.... don't switch, By the way, I think that you are overestimating your problems. There's no reason why a Mac won't do Windows as good as any PC. But that's your call - whichever way it goes.
XP came out in '02. Vista was supposed to come out in what? '04? It's almost '07. They are losing more users to just not releasing than piracy. Every day that goes by creates more and more Mac and *NIX users. If Vista doesn't come out soon, all there will be of it are screenshots (viewed on a Linux box with Firefox).
An awful lot of defnitive statments being made (Vista requires too much; Mac OSX is so much better than Vista; no one will buy it; no one will be albe to use it; no one will want it) considering the story was all about possible requirements and possible features. MS has given themselves 8-months to make it run better. In computer time, that's like a decade. gee, it's a good thing no all us intelligent people know how ot keep an open mind.
There is a reason why our corp. uses Windows 2000, and not XP or 2003. It is called PERFORMANCE. A long forgotten word in Redmond. By the way - the article is nice informercial. Very entertaining really.
I hate to say it, but the pirate community always gets around these sorts of things. Anti-Pirate Program after Anti-Pirate Program has fallen to the hands of the massive amount of people who want to give out free software. (Serial Numbers, Adobe's Online Validation, ect.)
It's just a matter of time. One company can't hire anywhere near the amount of programmers it would take to take down the entire community of pirates.
So you want an OS that works, looks cool and is not infected 24 -7 by a virus. So you want to get a mac. But yoou don't want to loose your games or that app that is not available for the MAc. You get Bootcamp, period. <a class="jive-link-external" href="http://ptech.wsj.com/archive/ptech-20060406.html" target="_newWindow">http://ptech.wsj.com/archive/ptech-20060406.html</a>
If you really need to run a Windows app, a cheap pc only costs about $100.00 more than a full copy of XP. Don't even bother buying a keyboard/mouse/and monitor. Just use remote desktop when you're stuck using Windows.
I've never been a gamer but as far as apps that aren't available for the Mac - I haven't found anything I need as a I.T / Telecommunications professional that only runs on Windows. If a tool isn't available specifically for the Mac, it's probably available for Linux/Unix.
The same is true for home use. Firefox instead of IE, Moneydance instead of MS Money/Quicken, etc.
But I understand that's not true for everyone. Some of us are just luckier than most people :)
Thank God for the Mac. Long Live Apple! Hail to the King of Computing!
My subject line above says it all. :)But for the mentally retarded (hint, hint: Windows fans) let me clarify: Throw away your PC, keep your copy of Windows XP, go to your nearest Apple store, get a Mac with intel, download boot camp, install your copy of Windows and problem solved. This is all the Vista you'll need. In fact let's be brutally honest:Where do you think the inspiration for Vista came from? Yeah you guessed it! "Da Mac"
Pretty much all of the components in a are for pcs. Macs programming is so horrible that they are trying to make windows work on it. Explain that please.

I can't decide if I should laugh or cry at MS's ignorance.
There isn't a single software out there that doesn't have a pirated and fully functional version.
Remember when Windows XP was first released? They had the "unbreakable verification system".. No that wasn't it. The first release of Windows XP was the pirated one, installed on numerous computers before the official version was released.
Winblow$ has done it again! Aero graphics is purely accidently a copy of Sun's looking glass project!!! <a class="jive-link-external" href="http://www.sun.com/software/looking_glass/details.xml" target="_newWindow">http://www.sun.com/software/looking_glass/details.xml</a> they are a bunch of good programmers at redmond, but creativity wise, they prefer copy!
Why? They are a step behind again ... see <a class="jive-link-external" href="http://what.se/search.asp?vista" target="_newWindow">http://what.se/search.asp?vista</a>
First of all, Mac is definitely NOT the king of computing! Second, Vista will have to shrink its "requirements" in accordance to customers wishes, that is if Gates is really "after the kill" and is not just building a software for his own entertainment. Otherwise he may end up in a deeper p..e of s..t than he got into with XP. I take it he's still wondering why folks would stick to W2000, ME and 98SE instead of purchasing his overblown turkey called Win XP. That's what'll happend to Vista too.

Why is there a Lexus logo below the "high impact" button that sits below the article's headline on the Front Door page?
