The next generation of Amazon's Kindle Fire will likely have a smaller screen than many had been expecting.

The e-commerce giant is shifting the display size of its tablet computer to 8.9 inches from the 10.1 inches some had been expecting, according to a DigiTimes report today that cited unidentified sources in Amazon's supply chain. Amazon's 7-inch suppliers--Chunghwa Picture Tubes and LG Display--have begun to retool production capacities for 8.9-inch displays, those sources told DigiTimes.

DigiTimes did not give a time frame for when the new model might arrive but did say Amazon might also release 9.7- and 10.1-inch models in 2012.

Prior to the announcement of the Kindle Fire in September, rumors suggested that Amazon would launch a 7-inch tablet this year and follow that up with a 10.1-inch model next year.
