Apple to open retail store in Bill Gates' backyard Wired News reports that Apple will be opening a retail store north of San Francisco in the upscale Bellevue Square Mall - less than two miles from Bill Gates' Medina, Washington, mansion. "News of the planned expansion broke on Tuesday when Apple posted job openings on its website for several positions in the Bellevue store, including managers, sales clerks and a 'Mac Genius' to run the in-store technical support desk." H-P hires former Apple fellow, Xerox PARC founder The Dow Jones Business News reports that H-P has hired Alan Kay, a co-founder of Xerox Corp.'s Palo Alto Research Center and a former Apple fellow. Kay "will join as senior fellow of H-P Labs, where he will explore how to apply computing to new markets and develop software platforms for devices based on open source code, a term for programs for which the underlying computing instructions are freely available." Wacom to bundle Corel products Corel announced has announced an agreement to bundle its Painter Classic software with graphics tablets made by Wacom Technology. A ZDNN article quotes Scott Rawlings, Vice president of marketing for Wacom: "The union of Wacom tablets and Procreate Painter Classic means that Wacom tablet users can be tremendously creative, right out of the box." Handspring Treos get GPRS access CNET notes that Handspring has released a new software update that allows people with Treo models 180, 180g and 270 using T-Mobile cellular service to access GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) networks, which should provide improved e-mail and Web access. "Handspring says it is working with Cingular to ensure that the update is compatible with that wireless carrier's GPRS network. The new software had already been made available to Treo owners in Europe and Asia." More.
