Verizon puts the kibosh on BlackBerry Storm update?

Verizon Wireless might win over new subscribers with its largest 3G network claims, but the carrier could be facing some backlash from current customers, more specifically BlackBerry Storm owners, if it doesn't take some action soon.

We're, of course, talking about a firmware update for the bug-riddled Storm. While Canadian service providers, Bell and Telus, have officially signed off on BlackBerry OS version 4.7.0.113, Verizon's Storm is working off version 4.7.0.75, which was released way back in December 2008, and is still experiencing such problems as the device locking while typing a message and issues with the external speaker. Verizon Storm owners are also missing out on some new features like a landscape QWERTY keyboard.

For a while, it looked like Verizon would push out the firmware update soon (though when we asked our Verizon contact about it, she basically said "no comment") but according to Boy Genius Report, that dream is pretty much dead, as version 4.7.0.113 has failed Verizon certification and there's no word on when it or another version will be pushed out by the carrier.

Though the BlackBerry Storm 2 is confirmed to be in the works, there's no telling when the smartphone will come out and Verizon shouldn't leave current BlackBerry Storm owners hanging. Yes, you can download an unofficial update but 1) not everyone has the tech knowledge to do this and 2) why should the customer have to seek this out on his/her own? As important as it is to have a reliable network, so is customer service, so what do you say Verizon?

As a Storm user, this is disappointing news. I like my Storm, but have found it to be buggy at times. I was looking forward to this update. I could do the unofficial update myself, but I agree with Bonnie Cha when she says, "Why should the customer have to seek this out on his/her own?" Come on Blackberry; please get us an update that will "cleanup" the OS. My greatest fear is that I will have to wait for a whole new phone (Storm 2), which would further frustrate me. (More money)

Verizon subscribers don't need a Storm that doesn't work or a Storm2. Get the cheapest Verizon phone possible (that would be free). Get an iPod Touch. Add a Skype calling plan. Use the touch to call/receive calls from anywhere with WiFi access. Use your Verizon phone to call from everywhere else. I am no Apple fan and am even less fond of AT&T, but I can tell you this works like a charm with the added benefit of having an iPod and all the other Apps.

I own a Storm and pay my $30 a month. I find the Touch to be a much more enjoyable experience for a lot less per month. I also NEVER thought I would be saying an iPod works better as a phone than a phone, but sadly in this case it does.

I have had a buggy storm for about 5 months now. I have tracked all the other Storm updates worldwide wondering why Verizon is so slow to help their customers. This is the worst news I could have heard this morning. I like the idea of this device, but hate the functionality. There are too many issues/bugs to list. I can only hope that this report is not correct and Verizon supports their Storm Community. I didnt really want to install another companies' update, but if Verizon doesnt help out, I will be forced to.

Verizon has hung their hat on their network and have ignored the day to day customer service. If the past is the best predictor of the future, even though RIM may give them a terrific OS for the Storm, Verizon will cut it up until it is unrecognizable with fewer features.

I have the Storm and Love its potential, but it would have been a better phone from another provider. iPhone would not have been near as popular if Verizon had been the first to offer it; we would still be waiting for butchered updates. Hence the current treatment of Storm owners.

Verizon, one day you may no longer be the most reliable network; then what will you have to offer? You will go the way of Qwest.

"Verizon Storm owners are also missing out on some new features like a landscape QWERTY keyboard. "

The Storm already has a QWERTY keyboard in Landscape.

I had a Storm for 10 days before I gave it back to Verizon. It was sluggish to a fault and I don't regret going back to my Blackberry 8830 World edition

My Storm has been awesome. I have had very few issues and have been happy with my user experience. While a firmware upgrade would be welcome, personal experience with Verizon tells me they are cautious with Blackberry updates.

Well I find that Verizon is again moving forward and telling previous owners of the Storm TOO BAD!!! I have a Storm and am diappointed. The firmware is a joke and I had to upgrade to a newer version "illegally", but Verizon does not care to address the problem with the poor service on firmware. I just got an ipod touch and yes it works. Why is it Verizon cannot focus on working extensively with Blackberry to get something for the "hot" selling original Storm. Put those guys in the "its the network" commercial to work.
