- Take advantage of multiple CPU cores during file compression - Linux.com - "The mgzip tools that can take advantage of multiple CPU cores during file compression, while pbzip2 uses multiple cores for both compression and decompression." Interesting--I don't know how embarrassingly parallel compression is.
- Discover the possibilities of the /proc folder - Linux.com - "This special directory holds all the details about your Linux system, including its kernel, processes, and configuration parameters. By studying the /proc directory, you can learn how Linux commands work, and you can even do some administrative tasks."

- Flickr sets, sets, sets, and more sets--What to do if you like to arrange your photos into endless little piles and have a gargantuan monitor. Also, it helps to be a good, prolific photographer like Thomas Hawk. If you have good metadata, you ought to be able to construct these sets on the fly.

- VueScan Scanning Software - Software for getting more out of your scanner, including high bit depth DNG images. A useful thing if you want to use your scanner as a camera.
- Naked Light 1.0 beta due this week - The programmer behind this Mac-only image-editing application seems a little taxed, but he says the 1.0 beta will ship this week. He's on a leave of absense to write it now, though.
- YouTube - Pentax K20D - A useful video intro to the Pentax K20D from Pentax. I wish my camera had a built-in intervalometer.
- YouTube - Pentax K200D intro - A useful summary from Pentax of the features of the new K200D.
- Camera Lens Rentals - Online Lens Rentals for Canon Cameras - Another online lens rental outfit springs up. For example, $87 for two weeks with Canon's 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM or $20 for a week with the 1.4X or 2.0X extenders. Canon lenses only at this point. Another threat to higher-end local camera retailers.
- Nikon D300 False Low-Battery Warnings=Worthless DSLR - Notebooks.com - A Nikon D300 owner unsatisfied with the camera's quality. Bogus low-battery warnings, plus mysterious intermittent dark frames. Store exchanged it for a new one with no hassle, but the writer says, "It's time Nikon recognizes this as a serious quality control issue."
- Hands On: Zeiss ZF Macros for Nikon - PopPhoto - Warm words for two manual-focus f/2 macros from Zeiss, 50mm and 100mm.
- Canon Powershot G9 Review - Luminous Landscape - For when you have to travel, it's pretty good. "The only great camera is the camera that's there with you when the light happens." It won out over the guy's Leica M8, which is saying something, but it's not quite a "keeper."
- A custom grip for the Canon PowerShot G9 - This grip sticks on with an adhesive strip. Interesting.
- Lensmate - lens adapter accessory for Canon PowerShot G9/G7 - More aftermarket goodness for Canon PowerShot G9 owners. This lets you attach various lenses to the high-end compacts.
- Samsung GX-20 brief hands-on: Digital Photography Review - A quick look at the Samsung GX-20, which with some minor variations is a Pentax K20D.
- Guess the Title: A multi-player Flickr photo guessing game - This is amusing. Makes me feel bad about some of my lousy photo captions. _IMG-0123.
- Super Techies: Video interview of Brendan Eich on ZDNet.com - JavaScript creator speaks out on history. Bill Joy at Sun Microsystems "got it" that there should be a programming language for the masses, as opposed to the high-end Java, thus the "marketing scam" name of JavaScript. Interesting history from the Mozilla CTO.
- What's a better name for Fedora 9, Bathysphere or Chupacabra? - Voting on names is about as superficial as it gets, but what the heck, it's fun. I'd go for "Chupacabra" because a friend of mine thinks New Mexico is teeming with them.
- Xen 3.2.0 released--significant new features - Among the updates: PCI pass-through for better performance, Xen security modules, suspend to RAM, support for more bootloaders (probably important for getting along well with Windows, Mac OS X, and other operating systems).
- Andy Rouse Review - Nikon D3 - A Canon shooter likes the D3 for wildlife photography.
- Agence France-Presse to leave Canon, buy Nikon - It's supposedly moving to Nikon D3 SLRs. Interesting, though I couldn't find confirmation after a quick search.
- Luminous Landscape's Olympus E-3 Review - Generally favorable review by Douglas Brown, but: "clumsy, poorly implemented physical interface."
- Baltimore winter photo gallery - I know, I'm biased, but I just like photojournalism better than most photography. I used to shoot wild art for a newspaper occasionally, and I loved it.

- Apple crippled DTrace: Sun DTrace cocreator Adam Leventhal -- Dampened delight that Apple ported Sun Microsystems' DTrace from Solaris to Mac OS X. It's blocking DTrace from probing processes which exempt themselves. "This is antithetical to the notion of systemic tracing, antithetical to the goals of DTrace, and antithetical to the spirit of open source."
- A gripe about Adobe Lightroom documentation -- I've introduced a few folks to Lightroom, and I agree the state of documentation and tutorials is chaotic, in part because Adobe revved the software so often. Better than no updates, though. I also sympathize with the paralysis of hierarchy, DNG, etc.
- John Nack: Community-powered Lightroom help goes live -- Don't like Lightroom documentation? Fix it yourself with this quasi-open-source documentation effort.
- Free noise reduction plug-in for the GIMP | Photodoto -- John Watson likes this free noise-reduction filter for the GIMP.
- Harold Davis lurves his Nikon D300 -- "This is the first digital single lens reflex that I've used that approaches what a dSLR should be, and maybe even the Platonic ideal of a dSLR." Likes 14-bit raw, low noise.

- A developer of Windows on cruft in the Registry -- This is my single biggest beef about Microsoft Windows. Pathetic that insider advice is "don't try out new software." One reason I use virtual machines is to try out new software. What a sorry state of affairs.
- GPS Tracklog: Garmin Colorado 300 in stock -- A new line of outdoor-oriented GPS units from Garmin. Not cheap.
- FormatMessageW Error in Lightroom Export Plug-ins -- Some good sleuthing on why Jeffrey Friedl's Lightroom Flickr Export plug-in can break on Windows. I have this problem often. Looks to be a timeout-related problem.
- Bibble 4.9 Pro raw conversion software review -- A review of Bibble's latest software. "If you're neither working with RAWs or processing lots of images, Bibble may not be (right), but for if you're looking for lots of speed and some of the sharpest results around, there's nothing better at this price."

- Picasa Web Albums Uploader for BlackBerry--Upload to Picasa Web Albums from a BlackBerry smartphone. Bonus: automatic geotagging if your BlackBerry supports it.
- Jeffrey Friedl offers "Piglets": Plug-ins for Lightroom Plug-ins--This time, Friedl has built Tim Armes' LR/Mogrify export plug-in so it can be used as a subcomponent of Friedl's Flickr/Zenfolio/SmugMug/Picasa export plug-in. First time I've seen the word "fourth-party" used in a while. World's longest dialog box too.
- ImageReporter: Extract data from Lightroom database--Analysis tool for extracting information from the metadata stored in Lightroom's catalog. It's a free download.
- 5,000 Flickr photos lost to a phishing scam--This fellow lost his Flickr identity to a phishing scam that meant all his photos, comments, and online conversations were deleted. "How does one download all the metadata? Flickr should have an export feature that creates a .flk file on your PC." I don't think it's as clear as that.
- BreezeBrowser Pro supports 1Ds Mark III, D3, D300, E-3, A700--Raw files from the latest SLRs are now supported. That includes Canon's 1Ds Mark III, Nikon's D3 and D300, Olympus' E-3, and Sony's Alpha A700.

- Paleo-Future: Bearded Men of the 21st Century (1939)--Dang, and here I just shaved my beard off. I guess I just am too cowed by authority and missed the revolt.
- Rusty Russell gripes about git--A Linux kernel programmer ascends the learning curve of Git, the source code management system Linus Torvalds wrote to manage the kernel programming project.
- Call for community testers for Intel driver--Intel wants outside help testing its open-source graphics drivers. The "Intel team is not able to cover all hardware configurations, hence not able to reproduce or verify some bugs." Sign up at Intellinuxgraphics.org
- Havoc Pennington leaving Red Hat--A longtime coder is departing, but he's not saying yet what his new gig is.
- Intel 965 chipset blacklisted in Ubuntu 8.4 Hardy Heron--Programmers couldn't get good 3D support out of the new Intel graphics chipset.
- Ohloh Goes Open Source--An open-source command line tool to identify the language a program is written in and count how many lines it's made of. It's under the General Public License version 2 (GPLv2).

- Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac to ship in second quarter 2008 - Adobe previously said "early 2008," (http://www.news.com/8301-13580_3-9783661-39.html) but now it's second quarter. Not a big deal since Mac folks get iPhoto. Why bother offering pre-order months early? Answer: to make it not look like a delay.
- More Canon 5D Mark II Rumors | Photography Bay - Some guy's Canon rep said to expect an announcement of the new low-end full-frame camera at PMA (which starts January 31, but Canon's announcement looks like January 24).
- Tighter intellectual property restirctions at iStockphoto.com - iStockphoto is tightening restrictions on permissible photos; Previously, no face, no model release required. Now, if subject could recognize him- or herself, needs a release. Also out: recognizable cars, cruise ships.
- SimCity Source Code under GPL - The original SimCity is now under GPL, called Micropolis for legal reasons and refurbished somewhat.
- Mainframe: Will Microsoft Windows be next on System z? - Back in the 1994, IBM figured out how to boot Windows on a mainframe, but legal machinations between IBM, Microsoft, and Bristol Technologies killed it. "We'll never see a day when Windows will run natively on the mainframe."
- The Online Photographer: The Arc of a Forum Exchange - An amusing parody of a typical forum. Look for the hidden original definition (now probably obsolete mostly) of a prime lens.
- Peachpit: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Resource Center - A big collection of book chapter excerpts, videos, and other useful Lightroom training material.
- Holy moly--Nikon D3 SLRs spotted on the NFL sidelines - Canon has such a lock on pro sports photography that it's news even if just a handful of Nikons are in use.
- Shortcuts You Must Memorize - Inside Lightroom - I agree--this is a great list of very useful Lightroom keyboard shortcuts.
- PDF: Now an ISO Standard - Let's hope this will make "export to PDF" more common. It really is a useful format, despite its hassles and annoyances.

(Judging by the Four Thirds logo, this might be from that Olympus-led group.)

- Novell's top lawyer is leaving - Joseph LaSala, who's been involved in litigation with The SCO Group and the controversial patent deal with Microsoft, is headed for Discovery Communications. Novell said deputy general counsel Ryan Richards will take over for now.
- Olympus E-3 Review - PhotographyBLOG - Generally favorable review. Modest jabs about its size--so much for one of the advantages 4/3 cameras have over Nikon and Canon. "The amount of time you'll spend penitently wading through the manual will reward you with some seriously good images."
- ExifTool by Phil Harvey - a photo tag editing utility - Perhaps this will be the way I transfer geotags from one photo to others. Looks like a pretty powerful utility, and it supports DNG and various raw file formats.
