Short Take: Globalstar gets FCC license

Globalstar Telecommunications, a mobile satellite phone service provider, has received FCC licenses allowing the company to sell its service in the United States. Globalstar had been operating under a temporary six-month authorization from the FCC. The current authorization is subject to an agreement between Globalstar and federal law enforcement agencies concerning wiretapping on mobile satellite systems. Globalstar's domestic unit plans to offer limited commercial service in the United States in January, with widespread availability later in 2000.
