Lumentis raises $19 million

Optical equipment start-up Lumentis has raised $19 million in its second round of funding, the company announced Tuesday. Previous investor Deutsche Bank Industrial Holdings, a unit of Deutsche Bank, contributed to the round along with Japan-based Santec, a maker of optical components. In addition to the investment, Santec will distribute the Sweden-based company's equipment in Asia and partner with Lumentis in research and development activities. Lumentis makes DWDM (dense wave division multiplexing) equipment for metropolitan telecom networks. The company said it will use the funding to continue its focus on sales, partnerships, customer service and improving its products. Lumentis raised about $10 million in its first round of funding from Deutsche Bank, which has agreed to fund the company until it becomes cash-flow positive.
