Final Fantasy 7 Battle Royale Will Shut Down Next Year
The First Soldier will remain standing until January 2023.
You have until next January to play Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier.
Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier's multiplayer battle royale action will end Jan. 11, 2023, developer Square Enix said Wednesday. The game hit iOS and Android devices late last year.
"Despite all our efforts to bring you regular updates with fresh and exciting content, we haven't been able to deliver the experience that we were hoping to, and that you all deserve, so we have made the extremely tough decision to end service for Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier," Square Enix said in a release.
Taking place before the events of Final Fantasy 7, The First Soldier lets you play as a customizable member of megacorporation Shinra's elite Soldier unit in matches of up to 75 players. You can choose your own combat style, defeat monsters to earn experience points and gil, call iconic summons like Ifrit to fight for you, and ride across the battlefield on a chocobo. So you have a few more months to give that a try.
Even though The First Soldier is going away, Final Fantasy 7 fans will have plenty to play in the coming months.
Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, a remaster of a 2007 PSP spinoff, will hit PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC on Dec. 13. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the sequel to the 2020 remake of the original game, will also hit PS5 in late 2023 (and hopefully reveal exactly where the remake's wild ending is leading us).
On mobile, charming-looking compilation game Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis is due out this year.
Final Fantasy 7 came out on the original Sony PlayStation in 1997 and is hailed as one of the greatest RPGs of all time, selling 13.3 million copies worldwide as of June 2020. It's been re-released for multiple platforms over the years and is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS and Android. Its 2020 remake is available on PS5, PS4 and PC.
