While the Android 1.5 Cupcake update is on its way to T-Mobile G1 owners, the bigger question on some people's minds is when we're going to see a new Android device here in the United States. The HTC Magic, which was first introduced at GSMA 2009, has launched in several European countries, and Canada will get its Android devices in June, so how far behind could we be?

Well, according to the Boy Genius Report, July will be the hot month. BGR posted what it says is Wal-Mart's roadmap of upcoming mobile phones and under the July column is the lovely HTC Sapphire (another internal name for the Magic) for T-Mobile. It's expected to go for $179 with a two-year contract and interestingly, the Sapphire appears to have a better camera than the Magic: 5 megapixels versus 3.2 megapixels.

Also in Android news, TMOToday found a new iteration of the T-Mobile G1, called the T-Mobile G1 v2 (codename Bigfoot), which features a similar slide-out QWERTY keyboard as the G1 but in a much more attractive design. BGR later found the smartphone on the Wal-Mart document with a slated October release and $148 price tag, which adds some credence to the story, but here's hoping that we get some official announcements soon.

This is perfect. My contract with Helio will be over in July , I was going to get the G1 but now there could be more options at T-Mobile.

You know what I can't stand?!?! Why they go with T-Mobile! They have no reception anywhere I live, at school and where I do, it's half a bar!!!!!

WHO AGREES?

I disagree... Tmobile reception is just as good as Verizons and light years ahead of ATT. Also, their unlimited minutes, text and data for 90 bucks a month rocks.

It all depends on the area in which you live. Where I live, I get better reception with AT&T then my brother gets with Sprint.

This is wonderful news. The G1 screen feels like it's going to fly off when you flip it open to get to the keyboard and something more elegant (and solid feeling) would be welcomed. I'm happy enough with TMobile, but what really puts it over the edge for me is the savings in my over other companies.

iPhone vs. Pre vs. G2, July will be fun after all!

I haven't seen Tmobile's service improve since I left them for the iPhone. My parents STILL only get 1-2 bars in their house, I used too. Now standing even in the basement my iPhone gets full 3G signal there. Tmobile even almost kicked me off our family plan while I was in school because I roamed onto AT&T's network so much.

they can do that?
by kalel33 May 11, 2009 2:25 PM PDT
Yep, they kicked my mother off of T-mobile because of roaming too much(T-mobile doesn't charge roaming fees). I've had T-mobile for 9 years and has worked in every area I've been to very well.

Hardly sounds unreasonable on T-Mobile's part! If roaming costs them money, and they give it to you for free they're gonna have to have a fair usage policy, or heavy users would drive them into bankruptcy.

I'm with T-Mobile in the UK, and their signal is good overall, but not great where my parents live, *but* mobile phones aren't actually designed to be used inside your house, they're best suited to use outside, you know, when you're mobile?

I love the iphone.

I love NOT being able to upgrade the internal memory.

I love NOT being able to change a dying battery and sending it to Apple for a replacement while I sit for days without a phone.

Better yet I would love to void my warranty and buy a battery kit and replace it myself.

I love it when Apple controls every kind of software I want to install in my iphone.

I love it when Apple BRICKS a phone that I PAID FOR should I decide to tinker with it.

I love paying more for ATT's service. A plan with 1,000 minutes, unlimited text, 3g data play for the iphone would cost me $110/month with ATT. The same plan with my G1 with TMobile costs me $65/mo.

Yeah, I can't wait to get an iphone and be with ATT.

Well, what I would like to know is, does the g2 phone have a virtual QWERTY keyboard, or a physical one like the g1 has? because for people who like to text a lot, a virtual keyboard would be a bit more difficult.

IT called the My Touch we all know know. No keyboard..bummer...
But yes T-Mobile is overall a way better company then AT&T servise is better and T-Mobile is cheaper, and thats a fact look up how much plans are at at&t vs T-Mobile. Ive had T-mobile for 6 years now and i will never change.
Buy the My Touch or the G1 both are worth every penny.
Iphone is so outdated and bulky no matter how many times they update it. For such a big phone it sould have a physical keyboard, but hey, apple your lame. (Android ) phones are going to over shadow Apples app market.
