Segway, meet the Toyota Winglet

Toyota Motor on Friday showed off a new stand-up scooter that could one day be seen zipping alongside the Segway on the personal-transporter superhighway.

The "Winglet" has a body the size of an A3 sheet of paper that houses an electric motor, two wheels, and internal sensors that constantly monitor the rider's position and make adjustments in power to ensure stability.

A parallel link mechanism lets riders go forward, backward, and turn by shifting body weight, making the Winglet potentially useful for maneuvering in tight spaces or crowded urban environments.

Riders can cruise around at a leisurely 3.7 mph--not ideal for rushing to a meeting, but nice for scooting around a shopping mall, perhaps. (The Segway, by comparison, can hit 12.5 mph.)

The Winglet comes in small, medium, and large sizes ranging in height from 18 inches to 3 feet 8 inches, with handlebars that also rise to different levels. All three models are about 18 inches wide and 10 inches long. The smallest version weighs 22 pounds, and can be folded and tossed into a (big) bag for optimal shoulder dislocation. All versions of the device take an hour to charge.

No word yet on when we might see commuters atop the contraptions. The company will start testing the vehicle this fall at a Japanese airport and a seaside resort. More testing is planned for 2009 at shopping complexes and other bustling locales.

I have three concerns: 1) no handlebars 2) use in public places and 3) cost. The segway never gained mass appeal because of it's rich mans price tag and bulking form factor. Obviously, the Toyota one is smaller which, as was said in the article, is "useful for maneuvering in tight spaces or crowded urban environments." Though, if this thing cost thousands of dollars there will not be may takers, and the same number of walkers.

Actually they have 3 different handlebar heights. Look at the last picture & the caption.

It strikes me as very Jetsons. Not that that's a BAD thing. Still, I wish they had focused their attention on the flying car or pneumatic transport tube instead. ;)

their is a flying car but it wouldnt make mass production because nobody can affored except for the rich and plus who can pilot the car anyways....Its more like invent a car that has no wheels and can hover instead

Great invention, maybe we can get more fat people. Wouldn't want to lose a pound from walking.

I just hope for the day when people quit trying to be everyone's parent.

What if you buy groceries? Do they have a little tagalong wagon you can haul behind you?

What's the wagon called, a "Cutlet?"

This is defiently the Segway killer. Just like what the Japanese did to American cars, it will do to teh Segway. If you think so, vote here: http://www.ratemyideas.com/story.php?title=Toyota_Winglet_The_Segway_Killer

This must be an elaborate scheme to make Americans even fatter than what they already are. What's next people ? A device where you can lie down and move around by operating a joy stick with only a single finger (Watch Wall-E). Plus 3.5 miles per hour ? I walk at twice that speed ! On the other hand can this device move the average American around ? 250lbs is not light weight so the batteries will probably run out in 5 minutes - that is assuming of course that the wheels don't burst.

Notice the fat little Japanese woman in the picture?

While I agree with you, it's physically impossible to "walk" at 7mph. That would be running. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to walk for any significant length of time at even 4mph. Try it sometime. :)

I like the design, and I think it would take a lot of getting used to as far as riding it. Other than that it looks like a great idea, I wanna know the cost.

To add to what dribnif said, they should've just made a vacuum cleaner like that. Basically you ride around the house with it cleaning up the mess. I think people would actually pay for that.

I predict this will be a huge success in the U.S. That is just what those americans need! Something that will allow them to be even lazier than they already are!

If Toyota was even smarter they would create version 2.0 of this thing as a joint venture with a pharmaceuticla company that makes drugs for diabetes.

I am waiting for the day when we will have economical single driver electric scotters to drive on the freeways. A good chance of saving gas. I hope Toyota or Segway comes out with this idea.

I think this is a good idea for a small town. Those of you screaming about NO HANDLE BARS...YOU should read the WHOLE article! Don't judge until you get all of the facts.

3.7 mph? Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when people are walking faster than George on his scooter trying to escape from the band of angry seniors.
