Rumormongering: Nikon D400 imminent?

The Nikon D300 is ripe for replacement

(Credit: CNET)

Right on the heels of a rumor about a new Canon Rebel, rumors that originally surfaced in November about a Nikon D300 replacement have also reappeared, this time with a screenshot, ostensibly from Nikon Germany's site.

According to the capture posted on Nikonrumors and translated by Gizmodo, it's a 15.3-megapixel model with sensitivities up to 6400 and support for "Full HD" video (which Gizmodo incorrectly assumes must be 1080p; 1080i is also considered "Full HD," which is defined as a spatial resolution of 1,920x1,080).

Although I've really been expecting an entry-level D60 replacement instead--that camera was annouced in January of 2008, and it's in a higher turnover, faster growing market segment--a new midrange model is certainly overdue as well, lending credence to the timing. And if it's true, look for price drops on the D300 over the next month that will make it an excellent deal for shooters who don't care about video.

Bad timing for a D400. Local B&Ms I frequent have already seen a sharp drop in business with dSLR camera bodies priced over $1000; even w/ the "new" bounce, I doubt that a D400 will do very well given the economic realities of the times. The D300 (and D400) is still very much a "prosumer"-oriented product, what with the full frame D700 supposedly focused on the affordable pro market. As such, the D400 will be depending on discretionary big-ticket spending of the general public...something that seems to be in short supply these days.

enough already! I shoot seriously and have for a while. and what do i use? A D200, which makes incredible photos. I paid $1600 for it 4 years ago. How many of the same cameras is Nikon going to release? In 2006 you could get a 10.0mp or 12.2mp camera. same in 2007. and the same in 2008. 10 slr models in 3years!! look if you can't make a great photo with the cameras put out between 2005 and 2008, this camera will not help you. and who on earth is trying to shoot HD video with a still camera? Talk about overkill and the polar opposite of 'green'. how much plastic do we really need to create for no good reason?

Frankly I thin they sometimes wait too long to put new cameras on the market. When you used film you didn't complain that Kodak was making a new better less grainy faster film. You were simply happy about it. Will there is no film, and since sensors aren't made to plug and play in old bodies, I look forward to more new cameras. If they ever get me the one that does all I want then I'll gladly get it and be satisfied to spend my money on glass... but so far I haven't seen the perfect camera from Nikon yet.... That's why I have quite a collection of DSLRs in my home... If I want black and white, I have an old Kodak that only shoots black and white, gets me better results than newer cameras... if I want IR I have a camera for that... and if its color well to be honest I have one I like to use for outdoors and still another for indoors... I look at it as having the equivalent of different types of film. If you don't want anything new, that's cool... but some of us do look for better results from technology and are happy when it happens.

Any ideas if the D400 will have integrated GPS features?
