Google Street View might be available for the iPhone by the end of next week, according to a rumor.

The next update to the iPhone might be here in time for Turkey Day.

At least, that's what a Greek site called iPhone Hellas is claiming (via Gizmodo).

Google translations can be tricky things, but the site reports that "The iPhone OS v2.2 will be given in circulation on 21 November '08." That could just mean that developers will be getting an advance copy to test against their applications that day, but it could also mean that Apple plans to release the update as of that date.

The forthcoming update is reportedly going to bring iPhone users the Google Street View feature as well as over-the-air podcast downloads, among other things. An earlier report had pegged the release of that software for October, but that clearly hasn't happened.

Cool. But what the iPhone really needs is MMM and Cut, Copy, Paste. Come on Apple! It's embarrassing that we iPhone users don't have those simple, very basic features!

It's unlikely you'll see that any time soon. All apps and processes are being run as root with no provisions for security in place. If you allow copy and paste, you can plant malicious content/code into that portion and have a direct feed into the OS accordingly. It's a security risk. Apple would have to redesign the product to get around that issue.

I don't have copy/paste on the Touch and I'm used to having to write things down on post-it notes to keep handy for use with the Apple product. It's just something you have to do.
by anilsudh November 11, 2008 6:32 PM PST
I hope they never introduce MMM or Copy/Paste. Feature that get used 0.0000001% of the times. In my 1.5 years of using the phone I have never felt the need for these features. If Apple decides to introduce these features I hope they charge the people who want them, on a per message and per copy/paste action basis.

Well if its true that apple would have to recode the IPHONE to Cut & Paste then I say get too it Apple... MS BlackBerry & Palm have been doing it for years, I mean really... Why even make an astounding UI and all the awesome functionality of an IPhone when its still dramatically behind the competition in Key areas... Explain MMS then!???... The IPhone is an amazing success for Apple but think of how many more they would sell if It had features that are standard on even a Razr or a Q (Warranted Moto Sucks but you can MMS on a Razr and you can Copy & Paste on a Q) so Really what's going on Jobs?.... Hey Steve 40% of the US is on Verizon... CDMA's ready for an IPhone!
by pase121 November 11, 2008 9:24 PM PST
Vegaman_Dan, I would think that apple could initially limit the copy and paste feature to in house apps first and exclude third party apps for now. At least until they figure out a security solution.

Drenetta Green: I simply love the IPHONE and can't wait for a new release...I'll be in line to make the purchase.

Copy&Paste are MUST-HAVE for iPhone. Steve, wake up!
by mvdyk03 November 12, 2008 1:22 PM PST
anilsudh,

The ONLY thing keeping me from getting one of these is the lack of cut/copy/paste. You may use it to 0.0000001% of the time, but if they're trying to attract corporate power users who are currently using blackberries, this is a ridiculous oversight. I'd drop my BB for an iPhone in a heartbeat, but I have to have copy/paste.
by paulygparty November 11, 2008 2:06 PM PST
What is true MMS messaging? What's the different between what iPhone has and what people want? Smileys? I really have no idea.

Besides Cut, Copy, and Paste, I want to be able to write texts and emails in Landscape mode. This seems even simpler than the afore-mentioned. Why can't I write a text/email like I post in a forum or type in a web address!!

Thanks for keeping us posted, Tom.

paulygparty, I think the difference is interoperability with other wireless carriers and handsets. Not every cell phone checks email and has a web browser. Instant gratification also plays a part, the MMS standard allows most cell phone users to instantaneously send text, pictures and audio, which email cant do. I think the best comparison I could make would be Push to Talk.

you can downlad the app easywriter to type messages in landscape.

What's really embarrassing is when you buy something you are embarrassed at it's lacking features.

Nice try.
The iPhone does a LOT and it does it better.
But it doesn't do everything.

Yet.
by hermantf November 11, 2008 2:17 PM PST
MMM is Multi Media Messaging. I don't know the official definition, but it's basically the ability to send and receive attachments in text messages.

Right now, if someone sends you a photo (or any attachment) in a text message, you will get a text message that tells you to go to an address on the internet. That text message contains a login name and a password. It's pretty much impossible to remember both of these random passwords, and here is where the no cut copy paste comes in. You have to go back and forth between the text and the browser to get that information. Waaaaaayyy too much work.

Or you could take the time to get to a computer, launch a browser and do it that way. Again, not worth the trouble.

Plus if you want to send, lets say a simple photo that you took with your iPhone, you can only send it to an email address. It can not be sent to another cell phone via text message.

Like I said: Embarrassing.

Really? Embarrassed?

Why then would you have bought the phone? You KNEW these functions were not available? As well, what you might think as an easy feature (copy, cut, paste) may require extra effort that Apple is not ready to put into the iPhone. Obviously YOU don't know what technical challenges they are up against.

Agreed, these items would be nice, but I'm never embarrassed over something that I buy and if I ever were to get that point, then I think you personally need to evaluate the quality of your life.

Might I suggest an Etch-A-Sketch? Of course that only offers the cut feature.
by slecalvez November 11, 2008 6:15 PM PST
We all bought the Iphone expecting Apple to make significant and useful updates. Not these stupid features that are only luxuries or nice to haves only. I knew the Iphone didn't have cut&paste, but it's a simple feature tI thought they would add by version 2.0, as well as MMS and landscape mode for writting emails. Please... I agree, it's embarassing apple. Apple: Listen to your users and make updates that really make sense!
by KyleLC November 14, 2008 10:35 AM PST
If you know the email address of someone's phone, you can send photos that way. I do that all the time and the recipient receives it just as if it had been sent using MMS.
by s_shassy November 14, 2008 1:19 PM PST
I totally agree with you comment, that is what i hate most about the iphone, i really wish they could change this feature its very frustrating, i mean if we spend so much money on this phone it should have this simple feature dont you think.........well i really hope they will change it real soon......:)
by paulygparty November 11, 2008 2:57 PM PST
Thanks for the definition, Herman.

iPhone's still the best out there, but I can't wait for it to get that much better!

I agree, specially with all the different apps available now. I would love to be able to create short videos as other phones can but that's a nice to have... I still think it's the best phone out there.

I just hope the update will fix all of the problems the previous updates have caused in my first generation Iphone. Does anyone know if any lawsuits have been filed against Apple for the first generation Iphones usability issues caused by the updates?

I sure don't!
My iPhone (and those belonging to every technician in our IT department) hasn't had a problem with the current software, and there isn't a one of us that'd voluntarily reload the software our iPhones shipped with in 2007.

How about forwarding text messages? Sometimes we don't want to re-write the whole message if we want to share it with somebody else

Yes, this is one feature that is useful to have. As it is, typing using touch screen can quite a pain. With these message forwarding features features, I will cherish the time I will save in retyping, ever.

i only have an ipod touch right now, but am so grateful for these updates. I had the LG Dare until i just had to sell it on ebay. The bugs with the dare's music player and terrible touch screen, and app crashing were aweful, but what's worse is that neither LG nor Verizon will be coming out with updates anytime soon. I'm just happy my ipod will get kinks worked out and even some extra features.

I'm an Apple hater no more.

what extra features? An update to a map application? WOW..

How about making gps useful and getting a real app in there? The whole gps thing was a gimmick.

I think all the previous posts are missing the larger issue here with the iphone. I think everyone would agree that the UI is fabulous, the applications are unmatched, and it wins in the cool factor. The bigger issue is that the iphone as a phone SUCKS! Call quality/reception is poor at best. With 3G on its worse and battery life is poor. While copy/paste, MMM and forwarding would be huge benefits, they would not garner additional market share for Apple. With the second generation iphone, the draw was 3G as well as support for exchange servers (blackberry push). As an owner of an iphone and a company owned BB Curve, I gotta tell you, the BB blows away the iphone in battery life, reception, and email support. Its clear that these two phones are built for two audiences. The BB for on the go corporate/sales folks. The iphone for gadget hungry folks. I typically use the BB for phone calls and email and the iphone for surfing the internet and playing games.

Second that! The iPhone has the cool factor going but it is not for business users.
by pjmaley November 12, 2008 1:12 PM PST
bull, our execs have been leaving BB in the dust since the 3G. once you learn how to manage the battery it's far superior. i have had 5 blackberries and will never go back.
by big.mouth November 12, 2008 7:53 AM PST
Who gives a crap about Google street view? Totally useless...

At this point, updating is more trouble than it's worth. Wake me when they offer copy/paste and voice-cued GPS. Until then, I'm happier with my jailbroken phone running 2.1.

I also wish Apple would implement MMS, theme/layout customization, tethering, and landscape texting/emailing. That's why I jailbroke my iphone :) 3rd Pary developers still haven't gotten MMS to work, but I'm sure a CYDIA/iphone developer will have it soon. The iphone is a great device and a jailbroken one might be the most advanced, fun, and easy to use mobile device ever.

Hint: I didn't call it a smart phone because it's so much more than that, even if you can't copy and paste. I guess device isn't for everyone. People should really research their purchases more.

I HATE it when people send me MMS. It costs me way too much. Its NEVER worth it. Think about what you're asking for people. MMS is a rip, just email a picture ( its free to email ).

Aztec you really need to understand that the world does not end at the US border. American carriers have kept the American mobile phone market behind the rest of the world for some years now (Poor 3G coverage, smaller SMS/MMS usage) and one of the problems is charging you guys for incoming calls and messages. No wonder MMS is not popular there. It would pain me too to pay to receive someone elses photo of their brat.

However the 4 1/2 billion of us outside the US love both SMS and MMS. Email is fine for sending pictures when it is not important that they be seen instantly because emails get checked only periodically. There are many times in message conversation that sending a picture is appropriate and it is the faster nature of the sharing of pictures that makes MMS great.

However, it is merely an inconvenience not to be able to send a picture message. Not being able to receive them is a different matter. In the developed world outside the US people send a lot of MMS messages and since almost all phones have MMS people send the messages habitually. Sadly with the iPhone I never get those messages. That is a big problem and Apple needs to address this to effectively compete with Nokia and Samsung in Europe, Australia, and Asia. Here people expect MMS as a standard phone feature in addition to email.

And judging by various forums lots of Americans want it too even if it is expensive there.
by gara1961 November 14, 2008 12:26 PM PST
artistjoh: Agree with you. The carriers in the U.S. have found a way to milk every cent they can get from its customers. Whenever I go to Europe--I take my locked Moto L-7, install a SIM and am able to get incoming calls and MMS free of charge. We in the US tend to just look at what we have in the U.S. and not what other folks in other countries are able to get. I'm with you--there are a lot of people who would like MMS instead of having to login to a stupid website to receive a picture or audio message. Of course--Europe has led the way in a lot of other things as well while the U.S. stays connected to the past. Now that the iphone is sold in Europe--it would amaze me if Apple added the MMS feature to their OS. I'm sure ATT would find a way to establish a data/message plan for MMS users. Only time will tell.
by bmccorm2 November 12, 2008 10:23 AM PST
Google Street Views = WORTHLESS. Copy and paste would obviously be a fantastic feature but it appears apple is not receptive to this. How about the fact that there is a known bug with WPA networks? Can apple fix this? I am tired of broadcasting my network over WEP just so my Touch can connect.

Did you pay to update to 2.1? My iPhone can connect to WPA WPA2 and WPA2 Enterprise.
by TimMyers November 12, 2008 10:24 PM PST
1. MMS
2. Landscape typing across the board (SMS, Email)
3. Copy/Paste

Everyone is saying it Apple! Is 2.2 really worth that .2? Seems like just a couple app updates to me. Street view and very slightly redesigned Safari? I'm hoping there's some stuff that just hasn't been leaked by anyone and that we're in store for a real 2.2 update.

Best opinion ive seen on the site so far. These are all the things I believe are necesarry to the iPhone. Come on apple. Listen to your customers.

P.S - I'm typing this on my iPhone

i'm so tired of people complaining about what the iphone doesn't have ,
instead of appreciating it for what it DOES. If it doesn't have the features u want BUY SOMETHING ELSE.
I have had mine for a year and a half and continue to be pleased with the updates,
