Nintendo DS Lite

Japanese business news outlet Nikkei Net is reporting that Nintendo will release a successor to the DS Lite by the end of this calendar year. Highlights of the updated feature set include improved wireless functionality (probably for extra-curricular use--not necessary for gaming), an onboard camera, and music playback.

The report goes on to suggest that the internal camera could be used by certain titles, with pictures taken with it somehow incorporated into gameplay. While there are no specifics on pricing, Nikkei Net says the new handheld should go for less than 20,000 yen (approximately $189).

Like with the DS Lite, the new DS will see a Japanese-only release to start, with a worldwide release soon after. We'll have more information on the new handheld as it develops.

hmmm... this sounds very interesting. I would love to this coming.
But, won't the battery life suffer with the extra features of music playback and the added camera?
I sure hope they find a workaround to that.
This is one compelling reason for me to buy it but, not completely sold.
I would LOVE if Sony did this to it's PSP. I would make me run out and get one.
The DS isn't very powerful when it comes to graphics power. It's very blocky.
However, I guess I'm not the target audience. Bummer.

Take a look at www.supercard.cn. for about $40 bucks music playback, as well as video playback, is already possible on a ds lite. Unless the new ds has a built in flash, the battery will be just fine.

I never had a DS or a PSP, but i do know those feature's will definentally rock! Well, maybe, it depends on what they're gonna do with it. this for the PSP would be better, and if i'm not mistaken, so would bluetooth. Bluetooth would be nice so it could transfer files, and audio could communicate with headsets. Heck, why not even take calls or pause the game when a call comes in. And in the end, why not Apple buy Nintendo! Ha! I wonder what would happen...

Wow, I bet this is something worth of a national parade. Im more that sure that japanese kids are going to go crazy about this to the point were is going to be a consider national threat to the economy and is going to further place nintendo atop of the japanese charts and stock markets. I am also very interested in the domino effect this move by nintendo is going to have over sony and apple. Now, these too are playing cathching up and nintendo is just pressing on the gas and not even looking back and price and features now make the ds if released as stated very compeling to both of the markets where these too companies dominate. Lets hope that stiff competition brings down cost and at the end we might all enjoy the business's beef makes us winners

APPLE? NINTENDO?

I don't think Apple has put out a handheld, sorry to tell you.

Let's not suggest that Apple will buy Nintendo. I fear that Apple will ruin the DS and other gaming systems. Apple does fine with the iPhone, iPod, and iMac. Nintendo does fine with the DS and the Wii. Since they are different companies with different missions, a merger may spell disaster. Apple should be Apple and Nintendo should be Nintendo.

Now the Nintendo DS update seems quite sweet. Not to mention there is a possibility of a battery upgrade to support the music playback. I wonder what audio types will be supported.

Nintendo's probably a little too expensive for Apple, considering it's one of Japan's richest companies at the moment. And I doubt battery life will be an issue on a nintendo system. It seems that with every iteration of handheld game systems, the battery seems to last longer even with more features.

That's a Babystep. The DS need to keep it's advantages and then take on the PSP's advantages next.

All I really care about is it using a WPA code for wifi. Xbox 360 only takes a WPA,

I'm not sure the minor improvements make this worth the extra 60 bucks or so. You can already listen to music, surf the interenet, watch movies, make free phone calls (voip) with the current DS lite using an modded cart. A .25 screen increase with a no doubt cheesy camera equals NOT WORTH IT!
