Palm Pre rumor of the day: June 7 release date

What's a day without a Palm Pre story, right? Uhh, right. The latest rumor making its way across the Internet tubes comes via SprintGurus, which says the Pre will launch on June 7 and not May 17 as originally thought.

This is based on an internal document posted by the owner of SprintGurus, who goes by "Coal," that shows all the devices that are in alpha/beta testing with Sprint. In the forum, Coal states, "For those asking about the Pre, there are 2 release windows, one is around 6/7/09 - the other I cannot say much on." We're not entirely sure where the June 7 date came from as it's not listed on the document.

However, PreCentral.net seems to think the timing appears about right since it falls within the timeline of a viral video Palm may be working on for the Pre. The video will supposedly show a man refusing to leave his apartment until Palm releases the Pre, and in the casting ad for the video, the shoot dates are April 29 to June 5.

If the June 7 release date turns out to be true, the Palm Pre would make its debut just one day before the start of WWDC 2009 and presumably the introduction of a new iPhone. Is the tech world ready for this? Am I ready for this? *Gulp.*

If the Pre is released the day before the third generation iPhone is announced at WWDC then Palm is dead. The iPhone will overshadow it. Palm needs to release this at least a few weeks before Apple announced the next iPhone's hardware.

I don't think so. Palm will probably benefit from the publicity generated by comparisons of the two phones. The pre being fairly unknown then suddenly being compared to the household name "iphone" would cause the pre name to ring out for a lot of people who otherwise would not know about the pre or that there is indeed a substantial alternative to the iphone on a carrier with a cheaper plan. I also think that physically the phones are different enough that consumers will actually have to make a choice as the pre offers a keyboard and the iphone does not.

@qst4

Think about it. Pre's specs are pretty much spoiled already, in such a short period of time, it's almost impossible to make any drastic change.

And from what we know, it's basically on par with the current iPhone 3G, the only advantage would be a faster CPU & QWERTY keyboard ( hardware wise )

But put its release date just one day before iPhone 3Gen launch, undoubtedly any well respected gadget reviewer will put it up against the new iPhone.

But with the 3.0 OS update, software wise Apple had addressed most major complaint except multi-tasking. So when Apple announce the next incarnation of the Jesus Phone & surprise us with a killer new feature or more. It will almost certainly leave Pre between a rock & hard place.

Of course that assess all depend on Apple do deliver us yet another full swing state of the art mobile device. But seriously, who is gonna bet against Apple's ability to awe ?
by tcr071 April 28, 2009 7:32 PM PDT
That is only if there is a new device from Apple at the WWDC. I'm not convinced, in the slightest, that there is a new device that will be announced. Even if there is a device I wouldn't expect significant hardware revisions unless you believe that Apple has been withholding features from the 3.0 Beta.

If there isn't a hardware release but just the wide release of 3.0 you will have the story completely backwards where the Palm Pre will be the only thing anyone can talk about which will definitely overshadow the release of 3.0.
by qst4 April 29, 2009 2:21 PM PDT
@allenkidz, you said it "any well respected gadget reviewer will put it up against the new iPhone." That's what we want. You say the pre is on par with the iphone, I say it will be better. But either way the publicity generated from such comparison will only put the pre more in the lime light. And if it is indeed on par with the iphone, but with a less expensive plan, consumers will have a more compelling reason to consider it. I hope it is released earlier, but either way I think the pre will benefit. I also think we know all there is to know about iphone, we've seen OS3.0 understand the differences in hardware (qwerty keys vs. more memory). Unless apples been secretly developing substantially advanced hardware, you tell me, what else is there to say. What other ground breaking tech do you think apple is going to show?

Palm always says that they are trying to release their new product but it never went out on the market (ie. Palm OS 6, Palm Access and even the Palm Foleo)

I dont think that Palm is releasing the Pre this year, Im sure that they are trying to catch-up Microsoft's strategy on to keep their loyal costumers waiting until they got board and purchase another else (just like the release of vista and now windows 7).

Assuming arguendo that they are releasing their product this year in leiu of the competition on the release of the 3rd gen Iphone, I would still choose the latter for there are no software avaiable in the market for Pre (like saying "you've got a Pre but you're all alone) unlike Iphone whcih beats PalmOS and WinMo regarding 3rd party apps (it used to be Palm as the winner of the coolest apps, what happened to you?) and besides Iphone has the most coolest software available in the market.

Yes. There will not be a single developer who will decide to write applications for the Pre. Ever.

thank you for the info i canceled my sprint account 4 months ago as i was going for the iphone then i heard about the palm pre. after doing some research i liked the phone so i decided to go back to sprint since my phone was only off for 2 days i called them up and asked them to reactivate my account with my same phone i still had sprint told me i would have to restart a new 2 year contract WHAT? i was with them for 14 years my last contract was up 8 years ago this is how you treat a customer of 14 years? so i decided to get the boost mobile unlimited plan to hold me over until the pre came out needless to say i hate the boost mobile service everybody i talk to sounds like a robot "TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER"
now they are saying no pre until June goodbye sprint and plam tomorrow i will buy me an iphone and sprint or palm if you decide you want this loyal customer back you pay my early termination fee with att contract that i start tomorrow and trade me a palm pre for the 16gb iphone i will have and i will come back.

For someone that claims to have been with sprint for that long, or even owned a cell phone that long, you're fairly dense and your dates are inconsistent. If you cancel the contract, it is no longer in existence, end of story. Once it's done, it's done. Why on earth would they re-instate a contract you voluntarily canceled because you've been a customer for awhile? You've really got to be joking on that one. Obviously you are not that loyal of a customer and clearly they wouldn't pay your early termination fee with a rival company just to get you back. Stop whining.

Sprint has terrible customer service. I am with him on this, Sprint don't keep acting like greedy babies, give him a break.

I was with Sprint for a couple of years. Their customer service is terrible. His comment is dead on when it comes to dealing with Sprint. They act like they don't want to hear your problem.

@elektrik_star: You sound like you are a rep from Sprint! Are you?
by stlsports April 29, 2009 7:42 AM PDT
hope you don't mind paying more for less. less coverage, less speed, less value. no multitasking. but a cool toy phone from apple. you can play lots of games on it. so it's basically a psp, or nintendo ds, that will make calls. sometimes. if there coverage is adequate. which it usually isn't.
by elektrik_star April 30, 2009 9:12 PM PDT
No, I am not a rep from sprint. My family and I have just been on sprint for the past four years. I've NEVER had a problem with them or their customer service. Neither has any of my friends on sprint, my family members on sprint, or even some of the people I talk to from other phone companies like verizon who use sprint. So I'm inclined to believe that you're either having some bad luck, or handling situations wrong. Every customer service on the planet is going to be subpar to what people feel they should be getting, but right now as it stands the family plan we have has 4 phones, unlimited everything and we pay 60 dollars a month FLAT. Not per phone, total. That's our contract. Long story on how we got it, but we're basically never leaving anyway. But I've got no problems to complain of. My Rumor is a crappy phone, but it's not really the service that's crappy, just the phone design. And since sprint allows me to get a new phone whenever I want at the 2-yr contract price (granted I update my contract) I'll just be waiting for the pre.

Did anyone else notice that the SprintGuru's Forum looks brand new? According to their own stats it says the "Most users ever online was 66, Today at 04:43 PM."

seems like one sure way to generate a lot of traffic these days it to be representing yourself as an insider giving a release date.

The forum itself is new, I am a long time contributor on other Sprint enthusiast forums (not buzzaboutwireless) and decided that I wanted to do something different and actually help share the information that a lot of people want to know.

Search for my posts on the forum and you will see I do a lot more than just "represent myself as an insider."

What is going on with the Palm guys? Why is it taking them so ling to get this phone out?

They will get overshadowed 2 days after their launch with the new iPhone - Apple is the master of product launches... I thought this phone was supposed to save the Palm company and give them a new lease on life... instead they're going to need to get CPR!

Palm is with Sprint, and that means that no matter how great the iPhone looks, theres no way all sprint customers will come running to ATT, so sure they may wish they could get the next gen iPhone, but they will go for the Palm Pre theyyve been hearing so much about, and most likely they will consider it a great purchase.

alright so let me get this straight.... plam plans to spend a bunch of money on ads and stuff then release the pre 2 days before the next gen iphone?

in my opinion, they should just realease at the orginal rumored date(may17th) or the following sunday.
they should start showing pre only ads right now.

this will give the pre time to sell and get some extra hype. then when the iphone(gay :) is released people will have already have bought the pre and not want(or be able) to buy the ipphone beacuse they have already have bought the pre.

message to palm...
if i were you, once you have enough pre's produced, release the pre as soon as possible to try and throw off people from buying the iphone.

think about it. lets say you are waiting for 2 phones... you don't really care which one you get.... then one comes out. which would you get? the one that came out first of course.

if the new iphone can multitask the pre is screwed. so release the pre now to secure some customers.

<3 pre

as much as i want the palm pre to be a serious competitor to iphone, i think it looks too clunky to be of any long term threat. palm should just position the pre against blackberries

the only thing keeping the Pre alive it's the buzz on it's release date. if they give that away, they have very little left to maintain the hype. after all the specs for the Pre were announced, Apple came in and stepped on most of the key features undermining the iPhone. a new iPhone with better hardware and its OS 3.0 will definitely crush the Pre. so this secrecy it's the only thing holding people's breath at the moment until the 3rd Gen iPhone release.

I totally agree with you on Sprint getting the word out to at least their own Sprint customers. I am a Sprint customer and so far have received only ONE email re: the Pre. Then again, maybe Sprint is more interested in enticing new customers than keeping existing ones in the loop....
by Haddonfield78 April 29, 2009 1:37 PM PDT
I agree as well. Sprint has only sent out one email to me about the Pre. I live in Kansas City (where Sprint's World Headquarters is) and most people here have Sprint service. I would say only a couple of other people I know have a clue what this phone is, or when it's coming out. Most of my friends/family haven't heard one thing about the Pre. If it weren't for CNET, I would have no clue about this phone. Pretty bad marketing if you ask me.
by chrisx1 April 29, 2009 4:35 PM PDT
So what.
It doesn't make sense to to any big advertising until it is about to be released at a confirmed date or else it will just cause confusion.
I am sure there will be plenty of advertising from Sprint when it is about to be released and after the release.
by UKStory1355 April 29, 2009 4:24 PM PDT
The most important thing for Palm is for them to get the software and hardware working well. They could not handle a clusterf*** of an early release like Apple did with the iPhone 3g or an epic fail of a release like the BB Storm. If the Pre is half as buggy as the Storm or the iPhone 3G originally were, than Palm is dead.

like many of us know, palm today is how apple was in the 1990s - falling like a rock. pre is better than any phone out there not only in terms of OS but also actually making the OS explode with superb features and capabilities that matter for the consumers. no product would satisfy every one of us, but it will win 60-70% of us. pre isn't a real multimedia phone (Sony Ericsson & Samsung are coming out with HD following HTC HD), pre may not be a camera phone (but its 3.2mp with extended depth of field should help), pre isn't a game phone (iphone is that), but pre is the most productive & user-friendly phone.... we dont watch video on our phone (we dont have time at work and how many of use working for an ad agency), we don't game (again, we work most of the time), we communicate and organize most of the time (chatting, texting, scheduling, browsing briefly on the phone or usingt the phone as modem to browse when on the go) and all this multiple task can be done sooo easily with Pre. all other extra-curriculars taking photos, listening to music, gaming would only drain the battery. of course Pre is not a guaranteed success if not supported with great marketing campaigns or the final product doesnt deliver what it promised. i think the next revolution in a mobile phone is "battery life" than you can stuff a device with all of stuff above.

Our company was on Sprint patiently waiting for the Pre. They have delayed the product for so log that we grew tired of hearing about all the hype and switched to Verizon. We have a saying in our business "You wait, you lose"

Waiting for what? What delay? They have until 29 June according to the timeline. What are you and your "Company" talking about?
by AppleSuxLeo April 29, 2009 6:57 PM PDT
Well...according to the experts , the company you work for...LOST !
by Sonettech April 29, 2009 8:36 PM PDT
I have such a hard time believing that the Palm Pre has a slide out keyboard. Why didn't they just an on-screen keyboard. What a mistake.
