HP to reorganize printing division

by Steven Musil

Hewlett-Packard announced a significant reorganization Wednesday of its most profitable division, paring five groups down to three within the printing and imaging division, according to published reports.

HP would not comment on whether jobs cuts would accompany the reorganization, but an HP representative told The New York Times and San Jose Mercury News that a "rebalancing" of its workforce would likely occur. The three new groups will focus on consumers and small businesses; large enterprises; and graphics that cater to large-scale printing of billboards, signs and professional photography, the Times reported.

The reorganization, announced by Vyomesh Joshi in an internal memo, is part of an effort to expand its business from computer printers to a wider range of printing activities. Joshi will remain the head of the division.

"We're moving from being a printer company to a printing company," spokesman Ryan Donovan told the Mercury News.

In May, HP reported that the division earned $2.38 billion on revenue of $14.9 billion in the first six months of its fiscal year.

AMD reorganizes sales, loses middleman

Advanced Micro Devices has reorganized its sales and marketing division so regional executives report directly to the chief executive's office and has lost a senior executive in the process.

Previously, regional sales leaders generally reported to Rick Hegberg, senior vice president of worldwide sales. Now Hegberg is departing the company, AMD spokeswoman Cathy Abbinanti said Wednesday, just weeks after sales chief Henri Richard left AMD. (Richard reappeared Wednesday at Freescale Semicondcutor.)

AMD and Hegberg had arrived at a "mutual agreement that he leave to look for other opportunities," she said.

"This is a shift to put increased responsibility and authority more within the regions. We're trying to create a flatter organization for AMD around the world," she said. "The ultimate goal is to be closer to our customers and drive efficiency for business operations."

AMD already had moved to the regional sales model with the greater China area and its sales chief, Karen Guo. Other regional sales executives who report directly to the office of CEO Hector Ruiz are Gustavo Arenas, head of sales for the Americas, and Alberto Macchi, head of sales for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Ruiz and Chief Operating Officer Dirk Meyer, assisted by Vice President Ian Williams, will lead regional sales for the Asia-Pacific region, but the company is looking internally and externally for an executive for that role, Abbinanti said.

Austin, Texas-based Freescale announced Richard's appointment to senior vice president and chief sales and marketing officer on Wednesday. "His expertise in developing customer solutions will accelerate our growth initiatives and build on Freescale's strong market position," Freescale Chairman and Chief Executive Michel Mayer said in a statement.

Since Richard's departure, more changes have taken place at AMD. Rick Hegberg, senior vice president of worldwide sales and an executive who reported to Richard, also is leaving, AMD spokeswoman Cathy Abbinanti said Wednesday.

Hegberg's departure is part of a move by AMD to flatten its management as the company shifts power from his office to regional sales and marketing offices, she said. There was "mutual agreement that he leave to look for other opportunities," she said.

"This is a shift to put increased responsibility and authority more within the regions. We're trying to create a flatter organization for AMD around the world," she said. "The ultimate goal is to be closer to our customers and drive efficiency for business operations."

Regional sales executives now will report directly to the office of CEO Hector Ruiz, she said, adding that the company already had moved to the model with China and its sales chief, Karen Guo.
