WWDC announcements: OS X preinstalled as of today!; Mac OS X Server released; 17" flat panel Studio Display; more

The WWDC opened today. Here is what was announced, via press releases:

    Apple to Pre-Install Mac OS X Ahead of Schedule Apple announced that it will begin pre-installing Mac OS X alongside Mac OS 9 on all new Macs shipping from its factories beginning today, two months ahead of schedule.

    Apple Introduces Mac OS X Server From a press release: "Apple has introduced the all new, industrial-strength, Mac OS X Server operating system along with new Macintosh Server G4 hardware configurations. The new Mac OS X Server is built on top of the latest Mac OS X operating system foundation and combines the power of a UNIX-based server with the ease-of-use of the Macintosh. The new Mac OS X Server integrates powerful server applications such as an Apache web server, Samba for Windows file sharing, WebObjects 5 application server and QuickTime Streaming Server 3, to provide advanced industry-standard services to Macintosh, Windows and UNIX clients and networks."       Mac OS X Server (10-Client Edition), designed for professional web masters and small work groups with simultaneous file sharing to not more than 10 Macintosh clients, is the least expensive offering. It has a suggested retail price of $499 (US).

    Apple First to Offer All LCD Flat Panel Display Lineup Apple announced that it will become the first in the industry to move to an all LCD flat panel display pro lineup. At the center of the new display line, Apple unveiled the new 17-inch Apple Studio Display, a digital LCD display featuring 1280 by 1024 resolution at an aggressive price of $999 (US). The company also announced that it has lowered prices for the other two digital LCD displays in its line, with the award-winning 22-inch Apple Cinema Display now available for $2,499 (US) and the 15-inch Apple Studio Display now available for just $599 (US).     Apple Ships Java-Based WebObjects 5 Apple announced the availability of WebObjects 5, Apple’s powerful pure Java application server for web publishing and enterprise application development. WebObjects includes innovative tools to develop sophisticated and scalable web applications that can be deployed on virtually any Java-compatible server. See this page for more details.

    Apple Retail Stores Welcome Over 7700 People in First Two Days Apple announced that its first two retail locations welcomed over 7700 people and sold a combined total of $599,000 of merchandise during their first two day weekend. The stores, located in Glendale, California and McLean, Virginia are the first of 25 stores the company is opening across the U.S. in 2001.

Updated Developer Tools CD A MDJ article notes that among the goodies given to all attendees upon arrival is an updated Mac OS X Developer Tools CD. It includes updated versions of Product Builder and Interface Builder that support developing WebObjects 5 applications, and Interface Builder is localized for Japanese users.
