Word 98 menu freeze?

We have recently received two reports (from Craig Matthews and David Ross) of what may be a new bug or conflict involving Office 98. The symptom is a freeze - primarily when accessing a Word 98 menu with a PowerBook G3 (although it may also happen with G3/BW Macs) running Mac OS 8.5.1 or 8.6. The mouse/trackpad can still move around but the program is locked up. A Force Quit (Command-Option-Escape) will terminate Word and "unfreeze" the Mac. David Ross suggests it may be linked to GoMac (as disabling GoMac prevented the freeze), although he is aware that many GoMac and Office users do not have this freeze.
