Troubleshooting Microsoft Office v.X 10.1.2: Long Update Scanning Process

CNET staff

Several users report that the Microsoft Office v.X 10.1.2 updater, which combines all previously released service packs and security updates, performs a scan of all mounted volumes. Depending on system configuration, this can result in an incredibly long (perhaps endless) process that generally forces users to restart their systems, and in some cases disallows applying the update. Rod Eldridge delivered the initial report:

"I tried running the Microsoft Office v. X 10.1.2 Update just released by Microsoft. It appears that the update scans all mounted volumes. I have OpenAFS installed on my system. It appears that the update is trying to scan all of AFS space. This would take forever. This should be considered a bug in their update process. At the very most, the update should only scan locally mounted volumes and not scan networked mounted volumes. Since I can't turn off AFS without rebuilding my entire system, I can't run the Microsoft Office v. X 10.1.2 Update."

Ed Dyer adds:

"I installed a fresh copy of MS Office v.X (no SR's or other updates installed) on Mac OS X 10.2.1. Attempting to run the 10.1.2 updater, authenticates fine, then 'gathering information' forever. Same after restart and redownload of the file."
