Troubleshooting Mac OS X 10.3: Possible solution for Jaguar/Panther Internet sharing problems; more

Possible solution for Jagaur/Panther Internet sharing problems Over the past several days we've been reporting on problems sharing an Internet connection through a host system running Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther) on a client system running Mac OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar). The problem does not apply in all cases, and generally seems to involve improper distribution of an IP address to the client systems.

MacFixIt reader Robert Engström reports that using manual setting rather than DHCP-assigned configuration in the Network pane of System Preferences proved successful:

"The problem occurred when I was when trying to connect my Power Mac G4 Cube's Airport Software Base station which is sharing a DSL connection. I couldn't access the internet on my Lombard. The lights on the WLAN card turned green and I could ping the cube and even internet addresses as long as I used IP numbers. But no server name would work. For instance ping www.macfixit.com would fail but ping 66.179.48.115 would work. After a few hours of reading all different forums without any real solution I started to troubleshoot and I found the solution (at least to my problem). On the PowerBook in the Network settings I switched from DHCP to Manual and enter all the information by hand. After that everything worked perfectly."

Meanwhile, Alastair Cutting has an unconfirmed tidbit about the Panther vs. Jaguar Internet sharing problems:

"Apple Support in Europe say that the problems previously identified "are a known issue", and we should 'expect Mac OS X10.3.2 to address the issue 'fairly soon...'"

Canon duplex printing John Griffing reports a problem with Canon duplex printing that does not manifest in Jaguar, but is present under Panther:

"I have a Canon i960 and recently got a Duplex (two sided printing) unit for it. Mechanically it works just fine. When set for automatic duplex printing in the Print dialog, it prints the first page, pulls the page back in and starts printing the bottom of the reverse side of the page. The only problem is that it prints top to bottom instead of bottom to top the way it should. The result is that the even numbered pages are reversed from the odd numbered pages. It is fun watching people who have documents printed this way. They read the first page, then flip the document upside down to read the second page, etc."

We previously reported other problems with Canon printers under Mac OS X 10.3, which were solved via the following process:

1. Delete all instances of ?Canon? off your computer (Go to the Finder, press Command [apple] and F together and do a search).
2. Download the driver from the ?Support? section of Canon?s website, install it and restart.
3. Rename: [hard drive name/Library/printers/Canon/BJPrinter/PMs/Canon190PM.plugin to [hard drive name/Library/printers/Canon/BJPrinter/PMs/190PM.plugin
4. Now go to Printer Setup in Applications/Utilities and click ?Add?
