Troubleshooting Mac OS 9.2.2: Conflict between EnterNet and Network Setup

Under Mac OS 9.2.2, there appears to be a persistent bus error during startup caused by a conflict between the Network Setup Extension (version 1.2) and EnterNet v1.11 (a new version, 1.2, is also available) corroborated by a number of readers. MacFixIt reader Charlie Cares writes:

"Long before resolving the problem, I discovered that I could avoid the bus error without turning off all extensions, by holding down the shift key during startup between the time when the bigger smiley Mac face appears and the point when the beachball cursor appears (just a few seconds). The only trouble with this was that I found that my printer would not work unless I restarted - and on restart I could let the boot carry through without the shift key down at all.

"During my conflict resolution I also discovered that the same bus would occur if I enabled the extension Apple CPU plug-ins. I only learned this because I accidentally enabled it: it's normally disabled since I don't have two processors.

"EnterNet is the software through which I access my DSL connection, so obviously I can't do without EnterNet.

"Anyway, the bottom line is that once I disabled both the Network Setup Extension and Apple CPU plug-ins, the boot completes normally."

UPDATE: MacFixIt reader Lanny Chambers suggests switching to an inexpensive router as a reliable replacement for EnterNet: Just another good reason to buy a router and ditch EnterNet. Routers are under $50 now; even if one doesn't plan on creating a network, a router offers a robust firewall and internal PPPoE management. Properly configured, a router prevents the Internet from knowing the connected computer exists at all. The Mac just sees a vanilla Ethernet connection. It's a no-brainer.

You might also try Access Manager (Bell Canada's name for EnterNet) from sympatico.ca. One MacFixIt reader writes "I think the version offered to business DSL customers is even newer than the one for residential customers."
