Time Synchronizer and -41 error: a follow-up

CNET staff
Yesterday, in describing a Type -41 error, we wrote that we "have never seen this symptom on any of our Macs." A clarification: We have seen a Type -41 error several times, just not one that seemed linked to the Time Synchronizer extension (as used by the Date & Time control panel). As several readers reported (and as suggested in TIL article #24431), this error is almost always linked either to a corrupt Finder Preferences or Finder file. This is what we have always found to be the case. Thus, while disabling Time Synchronizer may eliminate the symptom in some cases, the underlying cause is likely still the Finder. (Thanks, Jeremy Derr, Jeff Asselin, and others). On a related note, Jon Pugh comments that, if you enable Date & Time's "Use a Network Time Server" option, the control panel will still periodically attempt to access the network on its own, even if you select the option to update the time "manually."
