StuffIt 5.x problems with .bin files (a follow-up)

Last time, we reported that, after installing DropStuff 5.1 (particularly the StuffIt Engine and PowerPlug extensions included with the package), Expander may report an error when trying to expand a downloaded .bin file. Aladdin claims to be unable to duplicate this. However, we continue to get confirmation of this, including most recently from Brian Greenstone (of Pangea Software, makers of Nanosaur) and Nick Romano (of Nikrom, makers of TypeIndexer):
Brian writes: "I just wanted to confirm the StuffIt Expander 5.x and MacBinary corruption problem. For a few weeks I've had Nanosaur 1.1.2 on my web site for download and it is a .bin file. Seems that everyone who has StuffIt 5.x and who has tried to download the file is getting the Archive is Corrupt error even though the file unstuffs fine with 4.5 or earlier."

Nick writes: "Just a note to say that I have re-loaded the TypeIndexer web site with new copies of the TypeIndexer demo and updater files. We had many complaints about corrupt files that turned out to be Stuffit 5 archives. The files are now in 4.5 StuffIt format."

Work-arounds? Sajid Martin writes that, if you drag the .bin file to the Expander icon (or to an alias of the application), the file will decompress correctly. [Others have not had success with this.]

For Don Koffard, the problem only happened if the .bin file did not have a .bin suffix in its name. Adding the suffix fixed the problem.

Removing the StuffIt Engine and PowerPlug extensions was also a (less than ideal) suggested work-around. By doing this, you lose the added capabilities these extensions provide. Alternatively, as mentioned last time, downgrading to the 5.0.2 version of these extensions (supplied with StuffIt Deluxe 5.0.2) should work.
