StuffIt 11.0 (#2): Unexpected quits, crashes -- fixes; more
Several users are noting some significant issues with the StuffIt 11.0 family of products (Archive Manager, Expander, DropStuff, etc.).
Change from "StuffIt Deluxe" to "Archive Manager" Note that the StuffIt package no longer includes an application called "StuffIt Deluxe." Instead, an application dubbed "Archive manager" is included -- causing confusion among some users.
Continued unexpected quits We continue to report on an issue where various StuffIt applications exhibit unexpected quits during various operations.
One reader writes:
"When I try to access the 'preferences' in Stuffit Expander, the app quits unexpectedly."
Another reader, Don, adds:
"I have a possibly related issue with the new Universal Binary version. When I launch DropStuff, DropStuff launches Expander and then quits every time."
Some crashing, launching problems can be resolved by deleting caches In some cases, unexpected quits an other issues can be resolved by deleting specific system caches.
Try deleting files that start with "com.apple.LaunchServices" from the /Library/Caches folder, then quit and re-launch StuffIt applications.
Failing that, try using the cache clearing routines offered by utilities like Cocktail, Mac Pilot or Tiger Cache Cleaner.
MIME decoding absent for some Decoding of MIME e-mails -- a feature available in StuffIt Expander 10.0 -- is no longer working for some users in version 11.0.
One user writes:
"I downloaded StuffIt Expander 11 and noticed that it has not longer a functionality of StuffIt Expander 10. I use it to decode MIME Mails. When the mails are saved as text StuffIt 10 does decode the MIME parts into a folder. StuffIt 11 only gives an error message 'The file foo does not appear to be compressed or encoded.'"
Some users report that the feature continues to function properly, however.
