I am Bread, the strange video game that imagines players as a slice of bread on a mission to become toast, released a "Star Wars"-themed update on Monday, Star Wars Day, that lets players have an epic, yeasty space battle as they attempt to stop the deadly Dough Baker.

The update from Bossa Studios, called Starch Wars - A New Loaf, is now available on Steam for Mac and PC users as a free update to all those who own the I am Bread game ($12.99, £9.99, about AU$16.50). You'll need to have beaten the first level of the game to play the update.

Acing level one may sound easy, but if you've played I am Bread, you know how maddening it can be to get your bread from table to toaster without spoiling it along the way. It took me a few hours to figure out how to maneuver my bread masterfully enough to become toast, and I'm sure many of you struggled as well, right? Right?

The Starch Wars level for I am Bread is actually pretty fun to play. You play as Bread Leader, controlling your toast starship armed with lasers on a mission to save the rebels and destroy Dough Baker's mischievous Starch Destroyer, all while fending off bagel TIE Fighters out to destroy your toasty ship.

If Bread Leader can't destroy the Starch Destroyer in time, it's safe to say he and his rebel friends are, well, toast.
