RealPlayer G2 problems; possible solutions

Some, although certainly not all, users continue to report problems with getting RealPlayer G2b1 to install and/or work. RealNetworks told Robert Levy to delete all existing presently installed RealPlayer files from his drive and start over again. This worked.

Chris Cooper claims to have another solution (at least it worked for him!): "If your hard drive is name anything other than 'Macintosh HD' the RealPlayer G2 beta install will not work. You get an error stating that the installation failed because it could not create the file 'Macintosh HD:System Folder:Extensions:Real:Plugins.' After I changed the name of my drive to 'Macintosh HD,' the installation worked perfectly. The drive must remain Macintosh HD in order for the player to work. If the name of the drive is changed back after installation, the player will quit with a type 3 error until it is back to 'Macintosh HD.'"

Ilene Hoffman spotted a RealPlayer support document that covers a similar issue, that can occur when running RealPlayer: An "Error 23: "Requested URL is not valid" message means that Player was given a URL that does not point to a .RM or .RA file. If you are using a Macintosh, and this error occurs when you try to play a file, then the likely cause is that a / character is in the name of the hard disk or the file path."

Andrew Schwarz had a related problem: "I was trying to install on a non-System drive. I tried installing again but this time I did not change the default drive. It worked."
