Problems copying to FireWire drives: a follow-up

CNET staff
Regarding yesterday's report of problem copying data to LaCie (and possibly other brands of) FireWire drives, we have several replies. Overall, they concur with LaCie's assessment that Silverlining software is the cause. The work-around is to use some other software:

Simon Fairweather replies: "I have had these problems before but have all been resolved by changing to a Ratoc PCMCIA card and having HardDisk SpeedTools control the drive."

Mark Florida concurs: "I have a 10 GB LaCie PocketDrive, and have not had any problems with data corruption when using it with the FireWire interface. This may be due to the fact that I reformatted the drive with Intech's HardDisk SpeedTools v3.1.1 after I found that LaCie's FireWire driver was causing problems with Toast recognizing my LaCie FireWire CD-RW."

Charles Arthur reports: "I've got a LaCie 20GB drive. I use it both as a USB and FireWire. Never seen any trouble with corruption. I did find that when I first got the disk and loaded the Silverlining drivers, I couldn't see the USB disk. Solved that by getting rid of the Silverlining drivers. Just used the Apple USB Mass Storage and other USB extensions (which you can get from the Apple site)."

Finally, a reader replies: "I have a full-height 30 GB VST FireWire drive and have had no problems copying to it."
