Power button "sticking" on iMacs

Mark Swayne writes: "I've got an iMac DV that has been shutting down at random times. I spoke to someone in service who told me that there is a known issue with the power buttons on all slot-loading iMacs that can cause this behavior - but so far they have only seen the DV SEs with the problem." John Neufeld adds: "In our service shop, we've seen a number of iMac DV's with intermittent power problems that we've traced to the power button on the front of the unit sticking when pushed in. Our solution has been to remove the button and reshape it slightly with an emory board. On some of the units, the button remained firmly jammed all the way in even when the client tried to pry it out with a sharp object. These problems have not returned since our cosmetic fix." Ron Matthes adds: "It's not just on the iMac DVs. I've had 3 iMac 350s do the same thing." Tom Willing confirms: "There is a minor problem with some iMac power buttons (not limited to the SEs). The button will get stuck in the On position. Apple has released a simple fix to the dealers that takes about 15 minutes to perform. The problem is the power LED gets off center in the button which can cause it to stick."
