Power Adapter recall: replacement confusion

Power Adapter recall: replacement confusion

CNET staff
We have received numerous reports from users who have already received their replacement power adapters. Many we impressed by the quick response time. (See previous one and two.) More than a few users were also surprised that the replacement was not the same basic design as their old 'black bricks,' because the new adapter is similar to the 'yo-yo' model (or identical, we are not sure) that ships with current PowerBooks. Todd Zagumny's writes: "I was expecting an exact replacement that would match my WallStreet PowerBook, but now I am stuck with this very awkward yo-yo adapter. Although the brick did not have a built in cord case it fit into my briefcase a heck of a lot better."

The other issue of concern noted by several users is the tight fit of the power plug where it attaches to the computer.

Update: David Oshel writes: "The replacement yo-yo is only superficially like the iBook yoyo. It is plainly marked 45 watts AC, and the power plug is designed to fit the Powerbook G3 Series socket. That is, the plug is a different size, and a vast improvement over the old style plug, which was prone to short-circuit after some months of use. The yo-yo detaches from its wall cord, making a flat object in a laptop case. Also, the heat exchange properties of the yoyo sitting (in use) on its mushroom stem power cord are probably an improvement."
