PB 1400 G3 upgrade battery swap glitch: a follow-up Regarding yesterday's item on swapping batteries in a PowerBook 1400 with a Sonnet G3 upgrade installed, Barry Levine adds: "The Newer G3 upgrade for the PB 1400 also can display this problem. It is caused by a motherboard-level 'aging' problem that causes the 'failure to wake up' due to a chip on the motherboard not getting enough power (because the G3 card sucks too much of it for its own use). Newer Tech told me about this when my 1400 displayed this problem. The solution is a new motherboard which, obviously, is not a good option. So we just set Energy Saver to 'Never sleep' and the problem, therefore, never arises." PowerBook repairs mail-in only A source sent us this note: "PowerBook (FireWire) and PowerBook (Bronze) are now mail-in repair only. Effective July 1st." We now have confirmation of this from another source: "Effective July 1, the service strategy for the PowerBook (FireWire) and PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze Keyboard) is moving to express mail-in (depot repair) only." Apparently, this is essentially what is already the case for the iBook.
