Pantone extensions and Mac OS 8.6 conflict: a follow-up

Last time, we described a conflict between Color Picker and certain Pantone extensions, when running Mac OS 8.6. Several readers confirmed the problem and/or noted related symptoms (such as a -4003 error "when you open the Appearance control panel and select Appearance and try to select Other for the highlighted color.")

Several other readers noted that this Pantone extensions ("PANTONE® Color Picker for Apple" and "PANTONE® Responder") are not actually installed by Mac OS 8.6 but are instead part of Apple Displays Software 1.7.1. The Mac OS 8.6 Update leaves these files intact (Mac OS 8.6 also does not update the Color Picker extension from the 8.5 version).
