Palm HotSync and Mac OS 9.0.x: a conflict?

We received numerous replies to yesterday's report of an inability to HotSync a Palm when running Mac OS 9.0.2 (at least when file sharing is on). Most confirmed some sort of problem., although specifics< varied: "I confirm a PB G3 400 freeze with HotSync Manager installed and configured to launch Serial Port Monitor at startup." [Nico Amoruso] Another reader attributed wake-from-sleep freezes with his FireWire Powerbook to this same Serial Port Monitor file. "Running Mac OS 9.0.2, I have not been able to HotSync a Palm with AppleTalk turned on even though AppleTalk is pointed at the Ethernet port." [Franklin Marder] Update: A reader suggests: "Unchecking the 'Show more detail in HotSync Log' under the HotSync setup will solve the problem. Turning off the AppleTalk works too but it is more inconvenient. If previously corrupted, unplugging the cradle and resetting the USB may be necessary." "Using a PowerBook G3 500, the first time I HotSynced the Palm via the Desktop software, everything went great. But every subsequent sync ends up the same: after it recognizes the name and displays it on the Mac window, the sync fails when loading the first conduit (Install)." [Phil Goodman; and also reported by others.] "On a G4 400 with Palm's USB Connect kit, a HotSync terminated in an error. It also happened with a Keyspan Serial to USB adapter or a Keyspan USB to PDA adapter. It did not happen on a G4 350 running Mac OS 9. There are other postings on Apple's Tech Exchange confirming this." Interestingly, using Palm Buddy was successful. [David Morganstein] Gerald Hanks was a contrary voice: "On a G4 400, running Mac OS 9.0.2 with a Keyspan DA Adapter and file sharing enabled, synching has been working great." Dave Dawley found that a common USB fix-it worked here as well: "In order to successfully HotSync to my G4/450 with 9.0.2, I must unplug and reconnect the hotsync cradle from the USB port. Then it works fine regardless of appletalk/file share settings."
