New PowerBooks with preinstalled OS X: Brightness and Volume keys work correctly Steven Ferguson writes: "I just wanted to let you know that yesterday, I received a PowerBook G4 from Apple that came preinstalled with OS X 10.0.3. The major difference that I see in this one from other one's we have gotten before is that the Brightness keys and Volume keys function properly right out of the box. It seems that Apple may have resolved this problem on their new machines." [See previous coverage.]

Auto-restart after a power failure: Server vs. Client Greg Mefford notes that Mac OS X Server includes an Energy Saver option to restart after a power failure. This option is not available in OS X client. he found that if he copied the EnergySaver.preference file from the server to the client machine, the client machine would now also restart after power was restored following a power failure.

ProRaid OS X support: a follow-up Regarding yesterday's report about now OS X support for Formac SCSI cards, Jens Habermann replies: "I am using a Formac SCSI card in my Blue&White G3 and it works under Mac OS X without any problem for my internal HD. However, I cannot use external SCSI drives. I am using Firmware 1.5.7. My card is one of first production line (from Germany build 1997/1998). Newer cards are definitely different (smaller) than mine."

Disabling "Ignore Privileges" solves Trash glitch Regarding the "Ignore privileges" setting in the Get Info window of volumes mounted in OS X (see previous item), you might think that enabling this could allow you to delete a file that would not delete due to insufficient privileges. However, one reader was having this symptom while the option was enabled. He found that disabling the feature (and not restarting) immediately solved the problem: "I reopened the Show Info window and all of the privilege pop-ups were now active and I was able to move or trash any folder or file."
