Norton Utilities Wipe Info glitch: a work-around

Norton Utilities Wipe Info glitch: a work-around

CNET staff
John Wyckoff could not get the Wipe Info component of Norton Utilities 4.0 to work on his internal IDE hard drive (Mac G3/233 desktop running Mac OS 8.1 with 96Mb of RAM) when starting from the Norton CD. Symantec Tech Support told him there was indeed "a slight glitch in the software that caused the CD to grab the NUM preferences from the internal hard drive rather than the CD, when starting from the CD." This apparently prevents Wipe Info from succeeding. As a work-around, they suggested:
  1. Trash the NUM Preferences in the System Folder.
  2. Immediately restart from the NUM CD (by holding down the C key at startup).

Wipe Info should now use the Preferences file on the CD. John tried this and it worked.
