Microsoft confirms plans for iPod rival BusinessWeek reports that Microsoft has confirmed it is working on a series of music and entertainment devices expected to compete with Apple's iPod. "The products will be called Zune. Microsoft refused to provide more details beyond the statement, such as whether anyone in the music industry has expressed serious interest. Microsoft has been briefing music industry executives on the project for some time." More.

Apple's notebook share hits 12 percent CNET polls several analysts who see Apple's stock as a good buy. "Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer cited figures from market research firm The NPD Group that showed Apple doubling its U.S. notebook market share, as measured by units, to 12 percent in June from 6 percent in January. 'We are increasingly optimistic about the potential for Mac to gain meaningful share in the back-to-school and holiday seasons, while Microsoft Vista remains unavailable until January,' Merrill Lynch analyst Richard Farmer wrote in a note to clients on Thursday." Rumored wireless iPod The Australian reports that Apple may be preparing for a Christmas sales battle with the ultimate hand-held device: an iPod that lets you download on the move and doubles as a mobile phone. "The next upgrade of the 50million-selling iPod is expected to be capable of transferring audio and video MP3 files to the music player without wires. The use of 'wi-fi' chips in the players would bypass the need for a computer, allowing users to download directly from a wireless internet connection. The speculation comes amid reports that Microsoft will unveil its own device with a wi-fi chip, dubbed the 'iPod killer' More.
