Multiple Users 1.3 is now available from the Mac OS 9 Software Update control panel. (Thanks, Ronald Leroux and others.) At first, we thought that this update installed no new or updated extension or control panel. The main indication of a change was that Apple System Profiler listed "Multiple Users 1.3" in the Mac OS Overview section. Update: The update installs the Multi-User Startup 1.3 extension. We initially missed this because it has an April 5 modification date and so did not show up as a recently added file in the Finder. But we did pick it up when checking with Conflict Catcher. The Login and Panels files in the System Folder are also 1.3 versions. (Thanks also to Ian Page and David Wagner.) MacFixIt reader Philip Sandiford found that, after installing this software: "Secondary user's desktop picture prefs continue to be lost after logout and system hangs frequently after logout." However, using the version of Multiple Users on Apple's servers this morning, we had no logout crashes running on our G4 or iMac DV. Contrary to some reports that the update had been pulled, it was definitely there when we tried to get it. Update: Reports suggest that this update will only appear in the Software Update control panel when run on Apple's newest hardware (G4s, iMac DVs, etc.). For example, it did not appear on our PowerBook 3400 (running Mac OS 9.0.4). Others report a similar failure with Blue-and-White G3s. Note: Macintosh Manager 1.3 was released last April (see this MacFixIt item). This is the underlying software that allows Mac OS 9's Multiple Users feature to work. The April release was intended mainly for those using Mac OS X Server or AppleShare IP. Multiple Users' appearance in the Software Update control panel (for those running Mac OS 9 even without being on a Mac OS X Server or AppleShare IP network) is new.
